ICYMI: The UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Microbiology held its inaugural State of the Department address earlier this month. Department chair Dr. J. Victor Garcia-Martinez covered several aspects of the department’s research-driven and educational missions while highlighting the department’s recent accomplishments and forward-facing goals.

Joshua Huffines, a lab technician and father, earned his Ph.D. in microbiology from the UAB Heersink School of Medicine after five years of research on bacterial interactions in the nose. He balanced full-time lab work, academic challenges, and family life with strong support from his wife, children, and mentor. Huffines will continue his research at UAB in a postdoctoral fellowship in the lab of Michael Gray, Ph.D.

A study co-authored by Allen Zajac, Ph.D., titled "Gfi1 controls the formation of effector-like CD8+ T cells during chronic infection and cancer," was recently featured by UAB News. The research was conducted in collaboration with fellow UAB scientists, including Lewis Z. Shi, M.D., Ph.D. from the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology.
