Transform 🦋

Transformation isn’t about becoming perfect, it’s about growth.

It’s the courage to face challenges, the support to work through them, and the time it takes for real change to happen. Social workers walk alongside individuals and families through those moments, helping turn uncertainty into progress.

Change doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful.
Sometimes the most meaningful transformation happens one small step at a time. 💙

Transform 🦋

Transformation in social work doesn’t always look dramatic.

Often, it happens in quiet but powerful ways:
• A safe and well-coordinated hospital discharge
• A caregiver finally getting a full night’s sleep
• An older adult able to remain safely in their home

These moments may seem small, but they create life-changing outcomes for families.

At Alabama Aegis, transformation happens through thoughtful case management, advocacy, and support that helps people move from uncertainty to stability. 💙

to exactly two weeks ago at the Alabama Conference of Social Work when our therapist, Amanda Banta, and Nectar Therapy Services therapist Kristan Baer, presented to a room of 100 social workers on the importance of healing our trauma.

They presented on Healing the Past, Rewiring the Present: Lifespan Integration's Role in Trauma and Attachment Repair. As therapists who are trained in Lifespan Integration, they are not only uplifting others, they are walking others through a journey of transformation through:
🌀 Trauma Resolution
🌀 Emotional and Autonomic Nervous System Regulation
🌀 Compassionate Connection to Self
🌀 Attachment Repair

We are thankful for social workers like Amanda and Kristan who show up every day for their clients. THEY are what Uplift 🙌 Defend 🛡️ Transform 🦋 looks like in action.

Social Workers Are Everywhere 💙

Social workers serve in so many spaces where people need support the most:
• Supporting veterans as they transition to civilian life
• Helping students and families in schools
• Coordinating care and discharge planning in hospitals
• Protecting children through child welfare services
• Advocating for dignity and care in aging services

At Alabama Aegis, we see the impact of social work every day through case management for older adults and their families — helping them navigate complex healthcare systems, coordinate services, and make informed decisions.

No matter the setting, the mission is the same: support people, strengthen families, and improve well-being. 💙

Myth vs. Reality: Social Work Edition

Does anyone remember these images from about eight years ago 🙋‍♀️

Myth: Social workers "take babies away" or "just talk to people." 🤦

Reality: Social workers are constantly problem-solving, coordinating, and advocating. Every day they:
• Assess risk and safety
• Coordinate complex care plans
• Advocate within systems
• Support families in crisis
• and don't forget: document, document, document.

Social work is compassion and expertise working together to support people when it matters most. 💙

What does it mean to defend? 🛡️
🟰️protecting dignity
🟰ensuring access to care
🟰advocating when systems feel overwhelming

Social workers defend their clients at every level:
• Micro – supporting individuals and families directly, helping them understand options, make decisions, and access the care they need.
• Mezzo – working with care teams, hospitals, and community providers to coordinate services and make sure clients don’t fall through the cracks.
• Macro – advocating for policies, resources, and systems that improve access to care for entire communities.

In many ways, defend reflects the meaning behind our name. An aegis is a shield, known as a symbol of protection and support. At Alabama Aegis, that’s exactly what we strive to provide: standing beside individuals and families to protect their dignity, advocate for their needs, and help them navigate complex systems with confidence. 🛡️💙

We also asked Kendra's supervisor, Meredith Lewis, PhD, LICSW-S, "What made me become a social worker?"

"I was inspired to be a social worker following the legacy of my mother's 40 year social work career. I continue to be inspired when I receive feedback from clients, patients, social work students, and colleagues who show gratitude for assisting them in their lives."

We are thankful for the legacy that some social workers carry with them. It's not an easy responsibility, but it's a rewarding one.

Take a moment and reflect on your social work journey, and tag someone you'd like to recognize for their hard work and dedication!

Take a moment today or this weekend, and ask yourself, “What made me become a social worker?”

We asked MSW Candidate, Kendra Shaw Crutcher this exact question.
"I was inspired to pursue my Master of Social Work because of my younger sister, who has Asperger’s. It took years for my family to get her properly diagnosed and connected to the right resources, which showed me how difficult it can be to navigate support systems. That experience motivated me to advocate for individuals who cannot advocate for themselves and to help families access the services they need."

We are thankful for individuals like Kendra who answered a calling into this field. Check out our website for Kendra's blog post on dealing with the "Inner Critic."

Did you know there are more than 810,000 social workers in the U.S.?

It’s one of the fastest growing professions — and for good reason. With an aging population, caregiver stress, and a mental health crisis, the need has never been greater. 🚧

Here in Alabama, social workers are essential to helping families access care, benefits, and stability. While Birmingham is known to employ the highest number of social workers, there is a growing need for social workers in our rural counties and towns!
