We have exciting news! We are looking forward to seeing you all soon at UAB Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology, late Spring 2023.

Did you know that UAB is ranked #5 in the Nation for Obstetrics and Gynecology by U.S News & World Report? We could not be more excited to be affiliated with a Top Ranked program.

Anna Floyd, Hayley Carnes, and Sheila Lopez hope to be accepting patients in April and we will certainly update the group if that happens sooner. Watch for updates on the UAB Women & Infants Services page.

LISTERIA OUTBREAK: Share this outbreak information with your friends and family who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system.

Listeria can cause severe illnesses that result in hospitalization and sometimes death. It can also cause pregnancy loss or premature birth.

Investigators are working to identify specific brands of enoki mushrooms that may be contaminated.

The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses. This is because some people recover without medical care and are not tested for Listeria. Also, recent illnesses may not be reported yet.

To our beloved community,

As the saying goes, “rumors spread like wildfire”. As much as it grieves us to say it, this one is true. Simon Williamson Clinic’s OBGYN Department will be closing after December 31st of this year. Know that your outpouring of encouragement and concern has definitely reached us and means so much. As much as we would have liked to address this with each of you prior to you reading about it on social media or hearing about it from a friend, we knew that would be impossible so in staying true to a practice of transparency, we will do our best to address your concerns here for now and hopefully in a more personal way going forward.

We know that this news grieves so many of you in different ways, but we recognize that it is especially concerning to our pregnant population. Mamas, we see you. As of right now, we will begin the process of transferring anyone who has a due date after December 1st in order to make sure you are able to get established and build trust with your new care team prior to meeting your little ones. If you have a due date that is not near the end of the year and would like to continue your care with SWC until we are better able to see what will be in store for our team, we would love that. If you decide transferring is a better option for your family for now but would like to be kept up to date with the transition of our team (hopefully to a different facility - updates coming in the near future), we would be happy to do that as well. We will be reaching out via phone and in your upcoming visits to help guide you as you make these decisions and will take the next steps right alongside you. We will continue to offer routine GYN services until the end of the year.

Many of you have come to our practice in different seasons of your lives and met us in different phases of our journey with this program. Though this program has always had the grit of a grassroots movement, our hope has always been that the reach of the work we are doing would grow and extend beyond our clinic, that it would have a ripple effect and be the start of a greater change in Birmingham. Know that even though change is often sad and uncomfortable, we are still very hopeful for what will come next for our team. Don’t give up the fight. We aren’t either! 💫

*You* CAN do it! You ARE doing it!

According to my 6 year old, Labor Day is for labor workers, like mama. (Child of a midwife there)! Thank you birth workers, nurses, doulas, doctors, custodial, food service, fellow midwives. And of COURSE I can’t help think of the hard work and LABOR that families walk through bringing these babes into the world. We can do it!

Whether we met on the day you heard that first heartbeat or in the most vulnerable weeks leading up to meeting your little one, so many of you sought out our team. Some of you drive hours, many of you share our content and statistics with your friends and family, each of you give up luxuries or conveniences that other facilities may provide, all because you believe there is something unique about midwifery care. We are often on the receiving end of gratitude from our sweet families, but I think it is all too often missed how grateful we are for each of you. It is unmistakable to us that YOU are and will be the backbone of the change we want and believe will continue to come for women’s health in our city. It is hard to put in to words how much your grit and perseverance challenge us to show up with that same energy as we take this journey with you. I joined this profession because I loved helping women and families prepare for and meet their littles, but I never could have imagined what would be in store through you ladies. To so many patients turned friends, you’ll never fully know the impact you’ve had on our lives through witnessing the beauty and strength that comes through your vulnerability. Thank you for trusting us to walk with you. 💛

What’s the difference between a midwife and a doula? We get asked this all the time! We LOVE doulas, and are so happy when you have hired one to support your birth. Doulas are excellent at support- trained to physically and emotionally support families during and soon after birth - they provide comfort, information, and physical presence that can make a world of a difference in birth! While the midwife role is similar in some ways, midwives provide medical care throughout the lifespan. We can be your healthcare providers for sexual and reproductive issues, GYN problems, family planning, pregnancy/birth/ postpartum, and basic primary care. Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are advanced practice nurses (similar to nurse practitioners) and can order and interpret labs and imaging, prescribe medication, and admit and manage care in a hospital setting. In the US, there are multiple types of midwives (thanks fractured system!) All have gone through extensive training and roles vary from state to state. A core of midwifery care is the commitment to walk WITH women, to share knowledge between provider and client, respect human dignity, and partner with families in their decisions. We practice watchful waiting and non-intervention in normal processed, provide interventions when necessary, and collaborate with other specialists. Read more about our specialty on Midwife.org
