: While both are places where people are buried, a graveyard is affiliated with a church and a cemetery is not. Graveyards are often smaller, located on church grounds and may be limited to people of that faith or members of the church. Cemeteries are often larger and open to anyone who wishes to be buried there.

Fred Baur had the ingenious idea to stack Pringles. He came up with the idea while working as a Food Storage Technician. Before his passing, he requested his ashes be stored inside a Pringles can when it came time. In 2008, his family split his remains between a traditional urn and the late inventor's greatest creation.

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” https://womenshistorymonth.gov/about/

March is Women's History Month – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.

Our Story

All Faiths And Cultures Welcome

Johns-Ridout's Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel is a Birmingham funeral home that's committed to accommodating people of all belief systems and cultures. We believe funeral services should reflect the uniqueness of each life. In addition, we strive to help families create one-of-a-kind memorials that capture and convey the essence of a loved one.

Chapel and Reception Spaces

Our funeral home is 20,000 square feet in size and includes a spacious, light-filled chapel called the Celebration Chapel. This chapel comfortably seats as many as 250 guests and has a traditional, formal atmosphere. We also have a smaller, more contemporary chapel called the Maple Room and it can accommodate approximately 45 guests. In addition, the Celebration Room at Johns-Ridout's Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel is ideal for hosting a reception before or after a memorial service.
