Just days after Katie and JD had their son, Charlie, they were forced to bring him back to a hospital after test results showed he had no immune system.

Not long after, he was diagnosed with congenital athymia, and his parents feared his time was limited.

Imagine losing control of your body to the point where you can't even walk or climb a flight of stairs -- and doctors can't explain why.

In California, 39-year-old Cindy found herself falling repeatedly and having difficulty with everyday tasks.

She was eventually diagnosed with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), a rare disease that targets the nervous system.

Although the disease took a heavy toll on her, Cindy found renewed purpose when she turned her ordeal into an opportunity to advocate for others with the same difficulties.

In Mountainburg, Arkansas, Amanda and her husband, Dustin, were overjoyed when they welcomed their fourth child, Daxtin, into their family, who was also their first boy. But their joy became short-lived when they discovered Daxtin had JMML, an extremely rare and deadly blood cancer.

From there, Daxtin’s family and doctors race to find the right treatment while encountering numerous obstacles, including the COVID-19 shutdown and a last-minute medical complication.

By the end of his story, it becomes clear why Daxtin’s doctors refer to him as the “miracle baby.”

Shakira's daughter was in danger before she was even born.

When she was pregnant with twin girls, Shakira learned that one of them, Maya, had a rare, potentially deadly condition called ADA-SCID. This meant Maya lacked an immune system.

Shakira and her husband, Sam, share with Medical Stories their ordeal of raising Maya, who had to be isolated from others for a while after she was born. But despite this enormous burden, they find a way to help Maya overcome the dangers of her illness.

Did you know that despite making up only 3% of cancer cases in the U.S., people with head and neck cancer have the second-highest su***de rate of all individuals with cancer?

That's why when Mary Pat, an assistant at the University of Chicago, learned she had head and neck cancer, she dreaded what would come next. One type of treatment involved radical surgery with a low chance of survival, and even the best outcome meant losing part of her tongue.

But with the help of her husband and coworkers, Mary Pat found alternative procedures that were less drastic, giving her the chance to beat her cancer and have a normal life once again.

When he lost two of his brothers to a rare disease, Michael feared he would be next.

Michael, a Vietnam veteran living in Plant City, Florida, had tested positive for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), a hereditary disorder that can lead to lung or liver disease - and the same condition that his brothers died of.

He did not have much hope for himself, but as he tells Medical Stories, thanks to his doctors and his family, including his wife, Karon, he found the strength he needed to fight back and earn a “new lease on life.”

2-year-old Carson appeared healthy until a persistent cough led his parents, Tehani and Ramon, to take him to the hospital, where they were shocked to learn he had neuroblastoma, a cancer that mostly affects infants.

Despite the challenges of treatment, Carson remained cheerful, inspiring those around him.

His older brother, Ammon, provided much-needed emotional support, helping the family stay strong and connected throughout their journey in Philadelphia.
