The Ministry of the Baptist Home began as an idea in the heart and mind of a pastor’s wife, Mrs. As president of the Dakota Conference Women’s Missionary Union in the mid 1930’s she led conference women to set aside $100 for a future Old People’s Home. In June of 1939, conference delegates decided to begin a ministry to the elderly. A committee was appointed, met, and their recommendations were accepted. A two-acre plot of land located at 11th and Boulevard Avenue was purchased for $160. Because building materials and laborers were in short supply in August 1940, a house located at First and Thayer was purchased. On October 1st, the house was ready and the ministry of the Baptist Home began with the name of “Baptist Old People’s Home”. In 1947 after more land was acquired from the State of North Dakota, work began on a three-story building providing housing for 83 residents plus staff. The building was completed and occupied in 1949. The facility was one of the first of its kind in North Dakota. In 1955 the first addition, known as the East wing, was constructed. In 1961, the Nursing Home Addition was completed. Major renovations were completed in 1987 at the cost of $3.3 million. In December New Horizons, a memory care unit came into operation. It was one of the first of its kind in North Dakota. In December of 2010, the Baptist Home merged with Elim Care and plans began for the construction of a new campus. A 10 ½ acre plot was purchased on Nebraska Drive and construction began in the summer of 2012 with completion in October 2013 and occupancy in November. At this point in time, we became known as the Baptist Health Care Center. In 2018, Elim Care and Augustana Care joined to become one corporation now known as Cassia. The name was inspired by anointing oil made from the bark of the Cassia tree and referenced in the Bible several times. It evokes both organizations’ commitment to healing, wholeness and our quest for solutions that help those we serve to live well. According to sources familiar with ancient oils, Cassia is said to symbolize the heart of a servant. The merger of these two Christian organizations has allowed us to enhance our services to people of all faiths by strengthening our focus on resident care. Over the years, we have been known by a variety of names: Baptist Home for the Aged, Baptist Old Peoples’ Home, Baptist Nursing Home, The Baptist Home, and Baptist Home, Inc., and the Baptist Health Care Center. The word “Baptist” has been an integral part of our name since the beginning of our services to the community. In fact, even though we have been known as the Baptist Health Care Center since 2013, which followed the merger with Elim Care and the opening of our new facility, many individuals still call us the “Baptist Home”. With this new affiliation came new names for most individual facilities across Cassia. It is common to have rebranding happen during a merger. In November 2021, we became Baptist Health & Rehab. Our new simply displays who we are. We chose the neutral earthy tan tones from the Cassia logo color wheel as it blends with our environment of the prairie and fields around us and our building is in earthy colors inside and out as well. The wheat grass represents the culture of the people we serve at Baptist. Many of our residents came from small farming communities around the region. We are blessed to care for the hard-working people who made our region what it is today. From small beginnings more than 84 years ago, the ministry of Baptist has grown into a large operation – a large building, a large payroll, large budgets, many residents, and many needs. However, the mission has remained the same through the years: To glorify God … as we demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ.”

When you walk through the doors of Baptist, you know you are entering a special place. The homelike atmosphere, friendly staff, and caring volunteers all help to make the Baptist one of Bismarck’s premier providers of skilled nursing, a true home for all those we serve.
