With over 15 years of advanced practice experience, Sara brings extensive clinical expertise and a compassionate approach to patient care. Her educational background includes a Bachelor's degree from Minot State University and a Master's degree from the University of Mary, earned in 2009. A North Dakota native, Sara possesses an in-depth understanding of the region's healthcare challenges, specializing in family practice, preventive care, wellness, and cancer survivorship. 🏃‍♂️ Can running really help chronic low back pain?

A recent study says yes, especially for the mental side of pain. Adults with chronic low back pain who did a gradual run–walk program for 12 weeks saw improvements in mood, stress, and how much they worried about their pain. They were less likely to expect the worst, even if anxiety itself didn’t change much. 🧠

The takeaway: movement like running may help change how pain is experienced, not just how the back feels physically.

📈 Ever heard of the 10% rule?

It’s one of the simplest ways to avoid setbacks when returning to activity.

The idea is simple: don’t increase your activity by more than about 10% per week above what your body is used to. So if you normally walk 10 minutes, try 11 next time — not 20.

Whether you’re coming back from an injury or starting a new workout, doing too much too soon can overload your body. Small, steady increases give your muscles, joints, and nervous system time to adapt safely.

The goal isn’t to do more as fast as possible — it’s to progress without flare-ups.

Her educational background features a bachelor's degree from Minot State University and a master's degree from the University of Mary, earned in 2009. Native to North Dakota, Sara possesses a deep understanding of the area's healthcare challenges, specializing in family practice, preventive care, wellness, and cancer survivorship. Sara will begin seeing patients at Healthways on March 17th, 2026, and will be accepting new and existing patients.
