Insufficient Sleep Linked to Shorter Life Expectancy.

Oregon Health & Science University researchers report that aside from smoking, failure to consistently sleep seven to nine hours a night may be the strongest risk factor of early death—even more than poor diet, physical inactivity, and loneliness. The authors note that sufficient sleep is essential for optimal cardiovascular, immune, and brain health.

Benefits of Daily Walks.

The Mayo Clinic notes that increasing daily step counts to 4,000–8,000 steps per day (about 2-4 miles or 3.2-6.4 kilometers) can improve blood pressure, weight control, mood, balance, blood sugar regulation, and overall chronic disease risk.

Mobilization Therapy Effective for Acute Whiplash Neck Pain.

A recent clinical trial that included 120 patients with acute neck pain following a motor vehicle collision found that mobilization therapy resulted in faster and better short-term improvement than standard treatment alone. Doctors of chiropractic are trained in the delivery of mobilization and other manual therapies for the management of whiplash-associated neck pain.

Midlife Depressive Symptoms Linked to Dementia.

Using data from the Whitehall II study, researchers found that the following depressive symptoms at midlife are associated with an elevated risk of dementia in old age: losing confidence, not able to face up to problems, not feeling warmth and affection for others, nervous and strung-up all the time, not satisfied with the way tasks are carried out, and difficulties concentrating.

Many Lung Cancer Deaths Could Be Prevented with Improved Screening.

Despite evidence that low-dose chest CT scans can detect lung cancer early in at-risk adults—such as those with a history of smoking or occupational exposure to certain pollutants—and reduce lung cancer mortality nearly threefold, new research suggests that only 19% of eligible adults undergo screening.

Nearly 3 in 4 Adults Struggle with Daytime Sleepiness 😴

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 72% of U.S. adults report feeling sleepy during the day.

💤 Why this matters:
Ongoing daytime fatigue can impact:

Mood

Stress levels

Productivity

Relationships

⚠️ The Academy notes that chronic sleepiness isn’t something to ignore—it may be a sign of not getting enough sleep or poor sleep quality related to an underlying issue, such as sleep apnea.

✨ Quality sleep isn’t a luxury—it’s essential for whole-body health.

A recent study looked at people receiving treatment for depression, anxiety, and OCD and found something encouraging 🧠🧗‍♀️

✨ Structured therapeutic climbing sessions helped improve:

Mood

Mental focus

Social connection

Physical confidence

Even better, participants described the experience as enjoyable and many wanted to continue climbing after the study ended.

💡 This suggests that movement-based, skill-building activities may be a powerful complement to traditional mental health care.

Factors Linked to Central Sensitization

Central sensitization happens when the nervous system becomes overly sensitive, amplifying pain signals and lowering the threshold for pain. This can make recovery from chronic low back pain and other musculoskeletal issues more difficult.

📊 What recent research shows:

Central sensitization was not strongly linked to psychological distress or pain intensity

It was mildly associated with:

Higher body mass index (BMI)

Low vitamin D levels

🧠 What this may mean:
Poor metabolic health could play a role in keeping the nervous system stuck in a heightened pain state. This may help explain why some people don’t respond as expected to conservative treatments like chiropractic care.

✨ Looking beyond pain alone—and considering metabolic factors—may be an important piece of the healing puzzle.

Dementia Increasing Worldwide.

Using data from the Global Burden of Disease study, researchers report that the global age-standardized rate of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias increased from 1990 to 2021.

Because burden growth was highest in richer nations, the authors suggest that declines in metabolic health may be a contributing factor to the increased incidence of dementia, highlighting the importance of maintaining good metabolic health through regular exercise, a high-quality diet, healthy body weight, adequate sleep, and effective management of stress and inflammation.
