50th Annual Green Corn Festival - 2024

The Bixby Optimist Club will host the 50th Annual Green Corn Festival this summer, June 27-29, 2024. To celebrate this milestone, several special events are planned during the festival.

You are invited to the annual Green Corn Festival Poster Auction at the Bridge Church on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 11:30 AM. Students from across Bixby Public Schools submitted a huge number of beautiful posters to auction off this year. We cannot wait for you to see the winner of this year’s GCF t-shirt design. You can sign-up to attend here and pay for lunch at the door. (https://bixbyoptimist.com/poster-auction/)

We have a few spots remaining for Vendors for this year's festival. All vendors will receive a $100 discount for Green Corn Festival Sponsorships above $350. All sponsors are invited to the Corporate Carnival Preview on Wednesday evening, June 26, from 7 to 9 PM. Free wristbands are available for your employees and families based on your sponsorship level. We have made sponsoring this year's event easy by completing this online form. (https://bixbyoptimist.com/sponsor/)

While you are on our website, check out all of the wonderful sponsors featured on the footer of our web pages. Once the sponsor form is received and approved, you will receive an invoice you can pay online or by mail.

Whether you are a returning sponsor or new this year, we appreciate your support of the children of our community. This year alone, we have given away $5,500 in BEEF Scholarships, over $10,000 in Miss Bixby Scholarships, and over $10,000 in investments in the playgrounds and programs of Bixby Public Schools. This is only possible if you sponsor our only fundraiser, the Green Corn Festival.

The GCF Parade will kick off the festival on Thursday at 6:30 PM. We have streamlined the signup process online so you can participate in this year’s parade. This being our 50th year, we desire to make the parade the largest ever. Sign up today to save your spot! (https://bixbyoptimist.com/parade)

Friday night promises to be fun for the entire family as we coordinate with the Bixby Freedom Celebration to offer live bands, carnival rides, and the 10th Annual fireworks spectacular sponsored by The Bridge Church. (https://bixbyfreedomcelebration.com/)

You can check out the entire schedule for the 50th Annual Green Corn Festival online. (https://bixbyoptimist.com/events/green-corn-festival/)

Our mission is clear: By providing hope and a positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in youth, our communities, and ourselves. Our vision is to be recognized worldwide as the premier volunteer organization that values all children and helps them develop to their full potential. We are grateful for your past partnership through the Green Corn Festival, and we look forward to partnering with you in the years to come! We, indeed, are better together!

Thank you,

Tomorrow is Saint Patrick’s Day. Today, we will celebrate it at the St. Patrick's Day Street Party downtown Bixby. I am always inspired by Saint Patrick (c. 385 – c. 461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland. According to Patrick's autobiographical “Confessio,” when he was about sixteen, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland. He writes that he lived there for six years as an animal herder before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to his captors to spread Christianity in northern and western Ireland. Talk about a “Christ Follower” turning personal suffering into fulfilling the purposes of God. His life’s story is a powerful example of the teaching of St. Peter from the Bible.

1 Peter 2 (NLT)
“So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. 2 Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, 3 now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.

Living Stones for God’s House
4 You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor.
5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. 6 As the Scriptures say,
“I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem,
chosen for great honor,
and anyone who trusts in him
will never be disgraced.”
7 Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him,
“The stone that the builders rejected
has now become the cornerstone.”
8 And,
“He is the stone that makes people stumble,
the rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.
9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
10 “Once you had no identity as a people;
now you are God’s people.
Once you received no mercy;
now you have received God’s mercy.”
11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. 12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.

Respecting People in Authority
13 For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, 14 or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right.
15 It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. 16 For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. 17 Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king.

18 You who are slaves must submit to your masters with all respect. Do what they tell you—not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are cruel. 19 For God is pleased when, conscious of his will, you patiently endure unjust treatment. 20 Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong. But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you.
21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps.
22 He never sinned,
nor ever deceived anyone.
23 He did not retaliate when he was insulted,
nor threaten revenge when he suffered.
He left his case in the hands of God,
who always judges fairly.
24 He personally carried our sins
in his body on the cross
so that we can be dead to sin
and live for what is right.
By his wounds
you are healed.
25 Once you were like sheep
who wandered away.
But now you have turned to your Shepherd,
the Guardian of your souls.”

This weekend, as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, may it be less about green beer and more about fulfilling the purposes of God, even in the midst of personal suffering! Now that will prepare our hearts for Easter!

I have been working behind the scenes gearing up for the relaunch of my Life Purpose Coaching business called FocusUnleashed.

I set this love aside for about five years to focus on planting BIXBY.CHURCH in my hometown of Bixby, OK. The time has come to refocus some energy on helping people “unleash the power of a focused life.” Do you need to dial-in your Life Purpose “moving from success to significance”? Do you need help getting unstuck in life, work, or relationships?

Let’s schedule an initial consultation to explore how I might be of service to you.

Many of my life coaching references are available at www.LinkedIn.com/in/lendellnolan. Linked below is my Compass that keeps me focused on the true north of my Life Purpose.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered, 12-step recovery program offering a safe place to find freedom from life's hurts, hang-ups, and habits.

BixbyCR is part of a larger group of regional Celebrate Recovery ministries providing support every day of the week. During 2024, BixbyCR will continue to develop as a full-service ministry by relying on regional ministries for Large Group Celebrations and Open Share Small Groups.

Here is a partial list of CR meetings in the Tulsa Metro:
• Monday Nights - Asbury United Methodist Church - Tulsa
• Tuesday Nights - BattleCreek Church - Broken Arrow
• Wednesday Nights - First Baptist Church - Sapulpa
• Thursday Nights - First Baptist Church - Broken Arrow
• Friday Nights - Southern Hills Baptist Church - Tulsa
• Saturday Nights - Sequoyah Hills Baptist Church - Tulsa
• Sunday Nights - Aspen Creek Church - Broken Arrow

Typically, Large Group Celebrations include a time of praise and worship, reading of the 12-Steps or 8-Principles, listening to the teaching or testimony, and a closing Prayer of Serenity. The teaching and testimonies alternate weekly and are based on one of the twenty-five Celebrate Recovery Lessons. The testimonies are stories of people who have experienced freedom through Christ while working the CR 12-Step process.

Following the large group celebration, you are invited to attend an optional Open Share Small Group. First-time guests are encouraged to attend a New Comers Class that explains how CR functions, including the five guidelines for creating a safe place for recovery. Children and Student Ministries are typically also provided.

BixbyCR is a partnership of local churches that will be meeting weekly in men's and women's Step Studies during 2024. If you are interested in joining a Step Study, please fill out the contact form on our website (www.BixbyCR.com), and we will follow up with more details.

There is something that kills more Americans every year than drug overdoses, than guns, than car accidents. It’s legal, doesn’t require a background check to buy, is widely advertised, and if you’re 21, you can probably buy it at your corner store. It’s called alcohol.

While cold beers, glasses of wine, and hard liquor cocktails are often treated as end-of-the-workday or weekend indulgences, alcohol is technically a psychoactive, addictive drug, one linked to over 50 fatal conditions, including heart disease; breast, pancreatic, and stomach cancers; liver disease; hypertension; and stroke. It contributes to the death of 140,000 people in the US annually, making it one of the leading causes of preventable death in the country.
