Today is National Bird Day. Not only is it a good day to recognize the importance of birds in our ecosystem, but also the fact that many people feel that certain birds represent visits from beloved people we have lost. There is even a 2024 book about how birdwatching can help people in grief nurture hope. For those who are interested, it is called Looking Up: A Birder's Guide to Hope Through Grief by Courtney Ellis, who is also a pastor.

In case you need a reminder, grief is not selfish. Soren Kirkegaard wrote this in 1847:

“The work of love in recollecting one who is dead is thus a work of the most unselfish, the freest, the most faithful love. Therefore go out and practice it; recollect the one who is dead and just in this way learn to love the living unselfishly, freely, faithfully.”

We agree with practicing this kind of love. Reminisce to bring a loved one close again.

We talk about self care often. But what is self care? Self care is finding ways to take care of your own needs. Some describe it as ensuring your heart, mind, body and spirit are nurtured. Make 2026 your year of self care.

A small percentage of seniors make new year's resolutions, and that's fine. Instead of making resolutions that fall to the wayside, consider making 1 small change to enhance your life. Once you've mastered that, whether it's adding a fruit or vegetable to your diet or walking once a week, move on to another small but meaningful improvement. Research has shown that focusing on making small and gradual changes can be more effective than making radical changes to your life.

Happy New Year to one and all! We are so grateful for you and send peace your way in 2026.

With snowy weather making its way across the country, now is a good time to review a few winter walking tips:
-Walk like a penguin--slowly and carefully, with your full foot making contact with the ground
-Keep your hands free to enhance your balance
-Look for ice patches when you get out of the car or step out of the house
-Watch for ice under the edges of awnings and along curbs
-Choose boots or shoes with treads for gripping
-Stick to sidewalks
