After working incredibly hard during their time here and building strong bonds of trust with our staff, these two students got the chance to spelunk in this exciting caving outing! We traded campus for the caves, exploring the wonders of this fascinating underground world. Learning, bonding, and having fun are all part of the journey at Asheville Academy!

Dr. Deborah Posner led her math classes on hikes in the woods around campus to find examples of geometric symmetry in nature. Students brought back their collected items to the classroom, analyzed them for patterns, identified axes of symmetry, and created artistic collages.
Our teachers believe that the application of knowledge and skills through hands-on projects is a far more engaging and effective way to assess student learning than through traditional testing alone.

"The goal of this unit was for students to recognize the connections between mathematics and the world around us - including in nature, art, architecture, and even music," explained Dr. Deborah.

Meet the newest and tiniest heartthrob of our farm family - Piggy Smalls! 🐷✨ This petite Juliana piglet is already hogging our hearts with her love for snuggles. While she's still tiny, she will grow up to 75-100lbs.

So far, her likes include tomatoes, apples, zucchini, lettuce, berry-vanilla-flavored mini-pig treat crackers, snuggles with furry sweaters, people, blankets, and large fluffy dogs.

Piggy Smalls is in our farmhouse and always loves the attention from staff, students, and her fellow furry friends. Welcome home, little one!

We wanted to share some exciting news from Asheville Academy, or AAG, as many know us. We recently had a staff and student reflection session on our Mission Statement and Core Values. In the past, the G in our program's acronym stood for "Girls," but we've made a change to better align with our program.

Drumroll please... introducing, "Asheville Academy for Growth"! 🎉 This name has received overwhelming support from both our staff and students.

Students and staff voted to determine the core values that GROWTH represents, and the version below was the clear winner with a whopping 90% of the votes. Our Leadership team loves it, too!

To celebrate, our amazing teachers led an art project where students created incredible posters showcasing our 'Growth' Core Values. Can't wait to display these artworks around campus!

In Dr. Deborah's classroom, students dive into real-life applications of decimals, percents, and order of operations. Recently, they transformed into entrepreneurs, setting up a boutique with a twist!

Armed with mock money budgets, students tested their financial savvy. From crafting pricing schemes to making individual purchasing decisions, each student played a crucial role—some as thrifty shoppers, others as meticulous accountants.

As a surprise sale unfolded, our students faced a challenge that required quick thinking and teamwork. With grace under pressure, they recalculated their purchases on the fly, showcasing mathematical mastery, adaptability, and collaboration.

Dr. Deborah notes, "As a teacher and mom, I've observed that kids (and adults) tend to be especially motivated to apply math when it comes to money and real-life scenarios." This boutique experience is a great way to sharpen math skills and instill confidence in applying knowledge to practical, everyday situations.

In Dr. Deborah Posner's math classes at Asheville Academy, students are making a positive impact in our community! They rolled up their sleeves and crafted over 100 sandwiches to spread nostalgic holiday cheer to those in need.

Through this heartwarming community service project, our students applied their math skills to calculate the total cost of supplies, the number of people they could feed, and the rate at which they could make a difference.

For one student, it was a "first-time sandwich-making" experience, while another shared, "It feels really good to use our hands to help those less fortunate than us."
