We give thanks because "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls."

As we continue to wait... we can still pray. Please continue to pray for the North Korean people and for CFK ... for wisdom and divine appointments as we explore avenues for re-engagement, and
continuing service. We wait, trust and thank Him for opening the right doors.

Update | Please check item description. We will update as they are claimed.

To all of our local friends & neighbors:

Since Hurricane Helene, we have uncovered several lost items on our property (off of East State Street/Old Hwy 70/ on Center Avenue) We would love to see them returned to their rightful owner(s). We suspect many of these items could have come from the Black Mountain Mini Storage and we will be reaching out to them with these photos as well.

If you know to whom these items might belong... please have them reach out to us. (via Facebook or contact information below) Several of these items have initials/inscriptions and we would ask that you provide those details if they belong to you. Please understand that we want to make sure these get to the right owner(s). ๐Ÿ˜‡

Flood Recovery Update #2

We are so grateful for the help of many volunteers over the past 2.5 weeks and the hard work of our staff. A big shot-out to Kyle Linton & Sam Linton for all of their help in helping us salvage heavy furnishings, files and other items from our flooded office and moving them to our undamaged warehouse. We would also like to thank Christ Community Church-Montreat youth volunteers, leaders and various volunteers from Ohio, Tennessee, and other places who came and helped with site clean-up and removal of debris. Thank you to Blue Oak Affordable Tree Solutions LLC for trash / debris removal, and cleaning up of downed trees. To anyone we have not mentioned, you know who you are. Thank you so much.

We are also deeply grateful to the Town of Black Mountain and other local utilities who have been working around the clock to restore power and water. With the exception of the last two days, warm sunny days have helped us dry out critical paperwork and accomplish other clean-up tasks.

We hope to set up a temporary office while we determine next steps regarding our building and we will share further details as they become available. Many people have asked how they can help CFK and the region recover. We have a form on our website for Hurricane Helene Relief: cfk.org/donate

Emergency Flood Update

On September 27, 2024, hurricane Helene brought nearly 30" of rain and high winds to Western North Carolina, and eastern TN causing catastrophic damage. Asheville, Swannanoa, Black Mountain, Montreat, Old Fort, Chimney Rock and Marshall were among many mountain communities most affected. Those living at higher elevations became totally isolated due to downed trees, power lines and/or road/bridge washouts. Those living near any water, whether a small stream, lake or river endured catastrophic damage from flooding, rushing waters, and debris. The entire region has been without power, water, and internet due to many downed trees and power lines. Restoration has been slow due to the loss of roads/bridges, and also catastrophic damage done to water and sewer infrastructure.

The CFK office, located near what is usually a small creek that feeds into the Swannanoa River well downstream of us, hugely overran its banks with catastrophic flash flooding that tore our office building off its foundation and swept it across the road where it lodged between the steel handicap railing of a neighboring building and 2 trees that remained rooted in the ground. The building also flooded. Four other buildings in the neighborhood were also swept off their foundations, and several other buildings were flooded. The waters quickly receded, and we have been working hard to salvage what we could from our office and also help our neighbors. Gratefully, the warehouse that we built in 2012 was built well above the 100-year flood plain and survived this flood without any damage.

We had water filter buckets and solar lights stored in our warehouse, and we have distributed these to the community. They have proven invaluable to all of us during this time of prolonged disruption of basic services. Cell coverage is still very spotty, and internet and water service are only now beginning to be restored.

We hope to set up a temporary office as soon as possible while we determine next steps. We did have flood insurance. However, it will take time to determine what it will cover. Should you wish to help CFK through this disaster, please visit our Donate site, or you can mail a contribution to PO Box 936, Black Mountain, NC 28711.

We are very grateful for your prayers and the many offers of help and supplies that are starting to come to the region. We are also grateful for the hard work of town employees working around the clock to restore services. Thank you for your prayers - we need them! There are many tragic stories of great loss โ€“ and many are still missing. There are also stories of hope, grace and the coming together of this community. We empathize with the great losses of many North Koreans in the aftermath of their own catastrophic floods in July.

The CFK phone and fax lines are currently non-functioning. If you need to reach us, please call/text either Heidi Linton's cell phone (828-582-3346) or Terry Smith's cell phone (828-279-9853). Please be patient as cell and internet coverage is still very spotty. We are still very much in clean-up and recovery mode, so our usual activities may also be delayed or suspended until we have a functioning office. Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience. We will provide periodic updates on our website and Facebook as we make progress towards recovery.

We are also grateful for offers of volunteer help. However, the scale of the damage means that it will take time for the community to recover. Hotels, restaurants and other services remain closed or in emergency mode. We will update this as the situation changes.
Thank you for your prayers and continued support.

Update: There has been catastrophic flooding in Western North Carolina with power/water/internet outages and roads impassible. Our area was hit with severe flooding and damages. We ask for your prayers during this difficult timeโ€ฆ Our office and communications will be closed until further notice. We will be back in touch as soon as basic services are restored.

Our Story

In 1995, CFK responded to large-scale flooding that impacted millions of lives precipitating a famine that set the stage for the TB epidemic and humanitarian needs that followed. We responded by sending containers of brown rice from Louisiana and by confirming the arrival and delivery of emergency food aid. From that small beginning, our work has expanded significantly.

Currently, our organization provides ongoing support to more than 35 care centers including the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (NRL), 7 provincial tuberculosis (TB) and hepatitis hospitals, and nearly 18 TB and hepatitis rest homes located throughout the geographical regionโ€”many of them in remote locations.

We regularly assist our supported TB and hepatitis care centers by providing developmental assistance; confirming the arrival, distribution, and use of goods we send; and assessing current needs. Most of our aid is targeted to respond to the medical needs of patients. Our aid includes: food and medicine; medical equipment and supplies; agricultural support (tractors, greenhouses, seeds, etc.); bedding and blankets; and clean water. We are also involved in the renovation of multiple health care facilities, solar powered water and lighting projects, water well drilling, greenhouse construction, medical staff training, and so forth.

While the need is extensive, we are grateful for the resources and the opportunity to respond. Our overarching mission is to glorify God by ministering to the people of North Korea by bringing hope and healing, all in the name of Jesus Christ.
