Our weekly Trivia group continues to be a fun favorite here at Givens Highland Farms!

We’re happy to share that our first resident‑led Social Connections gathering was a great success — a casual opportunity for neighbors to connect and catch up with one another.

This event is sponsored by the Social Connections Committee, whose goal is to create welcoming opportunities for residents to meet new neighbors and reconnect with familiar faces.

A big thank you to the committee for their time, energy, and leadership — with more gatherings to come!

Residents and members of the public enjoyed a special concert at Givens Highland Farms in the Assembly Room, thanks to the support of White Horse Black Mountain

We were delighted to welcome Sam McKinney, a musician, storyteller, and preserver of Southern Appalachian culture. A sixth‑generation native of Altapass, NC, Sam works with The Altapass Foundation, Inc. (Orchard at Altapass), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving Appalachian culture and natural resources.

Sam shared a wonderful mix of old‑time music, bluegrass, folk, mountain ballads, gospel, and Appalachian stories that brought the region’s history and traditions to life.

The concert series continues with the next performance on February 24th. Learn more here: 👉 https://whitehorseblackmountain.org/communityhub/

Now featured on the Brookside Gallery are two beautiful collections of work that bring powerful stories, texture, and emotion to life.

Featured Artist: Genie Meissner. Genie’s paintings reflect a deep love of landscape, movement, and lived experience. Her expressive scenes—often featuring horses and wide‑open spaces—capture both strength and tenderness, shaped by a life rich with travel, resilience, and artistic rediscovery. Her work invites viewers to pause and feel the beauty of the moment.

Featured Artist: Albert Sperath. Albert’s sculptural work is thoughtfully constructed using an additive approach, combining unexpected natural and found materials into striking, imaginative forms. With a background that spans photography and sculpture, his pieces challenge perspective and celebrate creativity, problem‑solving, and the art of transformation.

We invite you to stop by the Brookside Gallery and experience these beautiful works up close.

📜 Now on display at GHF! 📜

We’re excited to share this wonderful 250 NC display, generously brought to us by Ansley Wegner, the daughter of resident Ann Herring. Thank you for helping us bring North Carolina’s history to life for our community!

America 250 NC is part of a statewide effort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence in 2026, honoring the people, places, and stories that shaped our state and nation.

The display is located just outside the main dining area and will be available for our community to enjoy for about a month. We invite residents, families, and team members to stop by, explore, and reflect together.

February is National Senior Independence Month!

At Givens, our Aging in Place program supports independence every day by helping residents stay safe, confident, and comfortable in their own homes.

Our team provides simple, meaningful modifications such as:
• Installing grab bars for stability
• Improving lighting for low‑vision support
• Securing rugs and removing trip hazards • Converting tubs to walk‑in showers
• Adding ramps and accessibility features

Small changes can make a big difference — and we’re proud to help older adults maintain independence with dignity.

❄️ A Rare Winter Sight at Lake Tomahawk! ❄️

Just two miles from Givens Highland Farms, Lake Tomahawk is a longtime favorite in Black Mountain — with its walking path, playground, tennis courts, picnic pavilion, and pool in the summer.

But have you ever seen it frozen?
With our recent stretch of very cold temperatures, the lake has iced over — something that rarely happens here! Our team captured several beautiful photos to share this special winter moment.

⚠️ Safety Reminder: As amazing as it looks, the ice is NOT safe to walk on. Please enjoy the view from the shoreline and help keep everyone safe.
