Neuroplasticity: What fires together, wires together!
Here are some of the key elements which facilitate neuroplastic/neural pathway healing and growth:
* Novelty & Stimulation – Do/try something new each day; change your routine and usual approaches to things. Part of this involves creating opposite, healing and supportive affirmations which speak directly to the change you seek, and then say them out-loud several times a day, doing this in the mirror can really help in the beginning.
* Repetition – This one is absolutely fundamental – the more you build the new pathways while simultaneously not using the old ones, the faster and deeper the new pathways develop, build and grow.
* Consistency – Do it daily especially in the initial phases, then when you see the change you desire starting to happen you can ease-off doing your practices 2 or 3 times a week
* Struggle and discomfort - these are the key ingredients to really start new pathways developing! So don’t be put-off by any unease, doubt, pain, discomfort or challenge as these are the times when the neural pathways respond the best and greatest. Instead, embrace struggle as a really good opportunity for going deeper and longer lasting growth.
* Focus and presence – spend time each day solely focusing on the new growth you want, be mindfully present and focused, breathing deeply and calmly even if you have pain, symptoms of other issues you are trying to rewire.
* Emotional component – allow your emotions to come up, welcome them, let them flow and complete their desired natural cycle. This will also include the somatic releasing that often occurs such as yawning, stretching and feeling more relaxed each time you practise.
* Patience – this is vital as if you push too hard, or want the change to happen overnight you’ll be quickly disappointed and disillusioned, so spare yourself this as its unnecessary. Be patient and gentle with yourself and view your daily practices as a loving practice of devotional self-care and love. Do them with love and kindness, like you would your child, pet or partner.
* No expectations – this one is also key and a very powerful aspect to drop, as any hint of expectation only adds self-pressure and is counter-productive, often blocking the change you seek. So let yourself be pleasantly surprised and you will be!
This is just a brief synopsis as there’s so much more to this process, but these keys are bedrock of Neuroplastic growth, change and healing. And trust me, this stuff works, like nothing else I’ve tried and experienced!!!
