🧰 Toolbox Tuesday: Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) 🧠✨

Did you know your body often holds onto stress even when your mind is trying to “push through”? Tight shoulders, headaches, jaw clenching, stomach aches, restlessness, and trouble sleeping can all be signs that your nervous system needs a reset.

One helpful tool is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) — a simple technique where you slowly tense and relax different muscle groups throughout your body. This helps your brain and body recognize the difference between tension and relaxation, allowing your nervous system to calm down.

PMR can help with:
✔️ Anxiety & stress
✔️ Sleep difficulties
✔️ Feeling overwhelmed
✔️ Physical tension
✔️ Emotional regulation
✔️ Grounding during difficult moments

The best part? It can be done almost anywhere and only takes a few minutes. 💙

This Memorial Day, our office will be closed as we take time to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸

As May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to gently remind our community that remembering, grieving, healing, and supporting one another all matter. Mental health touches all of us — including veterans, military families, first responders, and those carrying silent struggles behind the scenes.

Whether this weekend brings celebration, remembrance, grief, gratitude, or a mix of emotions, give yourself permission to care for your mental health and check in on those around you. ❤️

Our office will reopen on Tuesday.

Current status:
I should be finishing up work for my Goldman Sachs program… 😅

Instead, I’ve:
📚 Read random things
📱 Mindlessly scrolled Facebook
🤦‍♀️ Realized we hadn’t made a social media post today
🍕 Debated what to feed the kids for dinner for the last hour

I know I should make something homemade… and technically ordering pizza probably isn’t helping the budget plan. But honestly? Tonight, less stress might be more valuable. 😂

Even therapists procrastinate, avoid things, and have moments where our brains are just DONE. We may know the coping skills and help others navigate stress every day, but we’re human too.

Sometimes survival mode looks less like perfection and more like:
✔️ Giving yourself grace
✔️ Choosing convenience
✔️ Letting “good enough” be enough

So if you’re also avoiding tasks, overwhelmed by simple decisions, or ordering pizza instead of cooking tonight… solidarity. 😊

Wellness Wednesday:

Parent Burnout Is Real

Being a parent is rewarding… but it can also feel exhausting, overwhelming, and nonstop.

Parent burnout can look like:
-Feeling emotionally drained
-Snapping more easily
-Feeling guilty no matter what you do
-Wanting alone time constantly
-Feeling like you’ve “lost yourself” outside of being a parent

The truth is:
You were never meant to do everything perfectly all the time.

Taking care of yourself is not selfish — it helps you show up more fully for the people you love.

This week, try one small thing for yourself:
☑️ Take a quiet 10-minute break
☑️ Ask for help
☑️ Say no to something unnecessary
☑️ Get outside
☑️ Rest without guilt

You deserve support too. 💚

✨ Friday Mental Health Facts ✨

🧠 Mental health affects everyone.

1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition each year — yet many people struggle in silence.

💬 Talking about mental health helps.

Open conversations can reduce stigma, increase support, and even encourage people to seek help sooner.

😴 Sleep, movement, nutrition, and connection all impact mental health.

Mental health is not “all in your head” — our minds and bodies work together.

❤️ You do not have to wait until things feel unbearable to ask for support.

Seeking help early can improve coping, relationships, and overall well-being.

🌱 Healing is not always linear.

Growth can look like setting boundaries, resting, asking for help, learning new coping skills, or simply making it through a hard day.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, remember: your mental health matters just as much as your physical health.

Get to know our staff:
Q: Why does mental health matter to you?

Casey: Struggling with personal conflict and negative thoughts sometimes requires outside resources to resolve. You don't have to suffer alone.

Margo: Mental health is an opportunity to be part of a supportive community—one that can uplift you in ways that aren’t always visible, but are deeply felt.

Ann: I have personally seen how mental health can be an issue for me and those I love, and the difference seeking help makes.

Nicole: Mental health matters to me because I know firsthand how deeply life experiences can impact us.

From struggling with postpartum, to being caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting, to experiencing other traumatic events throughout my life — I would be lying if I said my own mental health had never suffered or been compromised.

The truth is, we all have mental health. Ignoring it does not make it disappear. It often prolongs the pain and can make things even harder in the end.

For me, healing started with honesty — being honest with myself that my mental health mattered and that it deserved attention, care, and support just like physical health does.
I want to be the best version of myself, and part of that means recognizing when I am struggling, allowing myself to grow, and continuing to do the work.

Mental health is not weakness. It is part of being human. And talking about it matters.

At Solace Counseling, a clinician’s learning doesn’t stop after graduation. We believe ongoing education and growth are essential so we can continue bringing our clients effective, evidence-based trauma treatment, updated techniques, and meaningful tools for healing.

Recently, Nicole had the opportunity to attend the International Association for Sandtray Therapy conference, where she was able to deepen her knowledge, connect with other professionals, and continue growing in ways that will directly benefit the individuals and families we serve.

We are committed to continuing to learn, evolve, and invest in quality care — because you deserve clinicians who are passionate about growth and healing. 🌱✨
