Hello!
Researchers at the Virginia Campus of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) are currently conducting a clinical trial to test the effect of Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) on gallbladder symptoms. Our prior research demonstrated the ability of OMT to cause significant gallbladder emptying.
We are enrolling patients that are 50 years old or older that have symptoms of gallbladder dysfunction (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or excessive belching after eating). This study is continuing for the entirety of 2023. Participation in the study requires attending visits in person at the VCOM Sports & Osteopathic Medicine (VSOM) in Blacksburg, VA.
Usually, when you go to the doctor with a gallbladder problem, surgery is recommended. We would like to determine if OMT would be a good alternative for relieving some of the symptoms.
Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy is the use of hands-on techniques to restore normal function in the body. OMT has been used by osteopathic doctors since 1874 and is effective for relieving pain and improving recovery time in various populations. For example, prior research has demonstrated that post-operative OMT can create a faster return to bowel function and shorter hospital stays after major gastrointestinal bowel surgery.
If you are over 50 years old and have gallbladder symptoms but no stones, you could be eligible to participate. Participants that are enrolled in the study may be in the treatment or control group. Participation involves 2-4 visits lasting 30-90 minutes each at the clinic (during which ultrasound pictures will be taken of the gallbladder) and a few follow up phone calls.
We are not offering any payment or compensation in exchange for participation.
