🌟 **Attention Parents!** 🌟

Blacksburg Pediatrics will be closed from July 4th to July 6th in observance of Independence Day. We hope you enjoy the holiday with family and friends!

As you celebrate, here are some important safety tips to keep in mind:

🇺🇸 **Firework Safety:** Always observe fireworks from a safe distance. Consider attending professional displays rather than using personal fireworks.

🌊 **Water Safety:** If you’re swimming or visiting a pool, always keep a close eye on your little ones. Use life jackets for younger children and ensure they’re supervised at all times.

🥤 **Sun Protection:** Apply sunscreen liberally before heading outdoors and reapply every two hours. Don't forget hats and sunglasses!

🚗 **Travel Safety:** Buckle up! Make sure all passengers are securely fastened in their seats and never leave pets or children unattended in the car.

Have a fun and safe holiday! We look forward to seeing you back in the office on July 7th. 🎆❤️

🌟 Today is National Heimlich Maneuver Day! 🌟

At Blacksburg Pediatrics, we want to remind all our families about the importance of knowing how to perform the Heimlich maneuver. This life-saving technique can make a crucial difference in emergencies, especially when it comes to choking incidents involving children.

Here are a few quick tips:
1. **Stay Calm:** Your calmness can help the child feel secure.
2. **Assess the Situation:** If the person is unable to cough, speak, or breathe, they may need help.
3. **Perform the Heimlich:**
- For adults and children over one: Stand behind them, wrap your arms around their waist, make a fist with one hand just above the navel, and thrust inward and upward.
- For infants under one: Carefully place the infant face down on your forearm and deliver firm back blows between the shoulder blades, followed by chest thrusts.

We encourage all parents to learn this technique—sign up for a local CPR/First Aid class if you haven’t already! It could save a life.

Stay safe and healthy, everyone! 💙 If you have any questions or need further information, feel free to reach out.

🌬️❄️ **Winter Safety Tips for Kids!** ❄️🌬️

As the temperatures drop, it's important to keep our little ones safe and warm! Here are some essential tips to ensure your children stay safe during the chilly months:

1. **Dress in Layers**: Make sure your child is wearing several layers of clothing, including a warm hat, gloves, and insulated boots. This helps trap heat and keeps them cozy.

2. **Limit Outdoor Time**: When temperatures are extremely low, limit outdoor playtime. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in just 30 minutes or less!

3. **Stay Dry**: Wet clothing can lead to rapid loss of body heat. Make sure your child is dressed with waterproof outer layers, especially if they’re playing in the snow.

4. **Keep Moving**: Encourage active play! Keeping their bodies moving generates heat. Fun winter activities like sledding or building snowmen are great options.

5. **Know the Signs of Hypothermia**: Be on the lookout for symptoms like shivering, slurred speech, or drowsiness. If you notice these signs, get your child indoors immediately and warm them up.

6. **Stay Hydrated**: Even in colder weather, children can become dehydrated. Remind them to drink water, especially during outdoor play.

Keeping our little ones safe is our top priority. Share this post to help spread awareness, and let’s enjoy the winter wonderland together! ❄️❤️
