💪✨ Intern Spotlight: Meet Stacy! ✨💪

We’re excited to spotlight Stacy Maguale, one of our amazing fitness interns here at Warm Hearth Village!

Originally from Virginia Beach, Stacy is a junior at Virginia Tech pursuing a degree in Health & Sciences on a Pre-PA track. She’s passionate about health, wellness, and helping others live active, fulfilling lives.

Stacy is also an active member of Kappa Delta, where she’s involved in both campus and community service initiatives—both locally and back home.

When she’s not studying or helping out in fitness, you can find her staying active, enjoying long walks outdoors, spending time at the beach, or hanging out with friends. 🌊☀️

We’re so lucky to have her energy and enthusiasm as part of our fitness team!

🔥 Fit4Life in Action! 🔥

Our Fit4Life class brought great energy and determination this week, with 13 participants taking on 14 different fitness stations in an exciting circuit-style workout creating an energizing circuit workout. 💪

Each station featured a different activity — from dumbbells and battle ropes to wall exercises with weights, rowing, and more. Participants moved through timed stations and completed each activity twice, keeping the workout fun, fast-paced, and engaging.

🏃‍♂️ Fit4Life for Active Seniors is a dynamic full-body workout designed to:

✔️ Build strength
✔️ Improve cardiovascular fitness
✔️ Enhance balance and coordination
✔️ Support mobility and independence

Using a mix of low-impact cardio, resistance training, functional movement, light weights, bands, and agility drills, every circuit can be adjusted so participants work at their own pace while still being challenged.

The energy in the room was fantastic— everyone showed up ready to move, sweat, and feel accomplished! The enthusiasm and effort would inspire anyone to get active! 🙌

💧🧘 Find Your Flow with Ai Chi! 🧘💧

Looking for a gentle yet powerful way to move your body? Ai Chi is an aquatic mind-body exercise that blends slow, flowing movements with deep breathing — similar to Tai Chi, but practiced in the calming support of water.

This incredible cross-training activity helps improve:
✨ Core strength
✨ Balance & flexibility
✨ Circulation & breathing
✨ Energy & stamina
✨ Relaxation & tranquility
✨ Focus & body awareness

Our class is led by Luci Merlo, who teaches aquatic Tai Chi and brings years of healthcare and wellness experience to every session. Luci is a graduate of Radford University and Virginia Tech, earning degrees in nursing and health education, and worked as a rehabilitation nurse before semi-retiring. She now enjoys sharing her passion for healing movement through her classes and wellness practice.

We wanted to share some exciting news from our partnership with VCOM and recognize the incredible work of our team.

Over the past few years, our Fitness Director, Kenny Harrah, has worked closely with two VCOM students who volunteered with us through multiple classes and even attended our Nonagenarian Party. As part of their research, the students distributed surveys to our fitness members and received 77 responses — far exceeding the 40–50 needed for statistical analysis.

After analyzing the results, their research showed that our fitness classes positively impact both the health and quality of life of our participants.

The students recently presented their findings at VCOM, and Kenny shared that both the students and their professor were incredibly enthusiastic about the project. The praise for Warm Hearth Village was evident and reflects the meaningful work happening within our fitness program.

We are proud to see how our team’s efforts not only benefit our residents and fitness members, but also contribute to the education and growth of future healthcare professionals.

📢 Village Center Closure Update

The Village Center is closed today due to road conditions.
The Fitness Center will reopen on Saturday as usual, and all departments will resume normal schedules on Monday.

Please stay safe and use caution if you must travel.

🌟 Meet Maddie Whitton! 🌟

We’re thrilled to welcome Maddie Whitton to the Fitness Department team at the Village Center!

Maddie is a senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in Exercise and Health Sciences. She’s a NASM-certified personal trainer with a passion for helping others move, feel, and live better. Her long-term goal? To become a physical therapist!

Outside of the gym, Maddie enjoys hiking, running, swimming, crocheting, and baking – so she’s got a great balance of active energy and creative flair!

We’re excited to see the impact Maddie will make here, and we know you’ll love getting to know her. Stop by the Fitness Department to say hi and give her a warm welcome! 👋💪

We’re shining the spotlight on someone who brings energy, encouragement, and heart to our community every single day — Kenny Harrah, our incredible Fitness Director! 💪💙

For the past 10 years, Kenny has been the driving force behind our wellness and fitness programs. His passion, dedication, and positive spirit have helped our residents stay active, strong, and motivated — and most of all, have fun doing it!

Whether he’s leading a group class, offering one-on-one encouragement, or just sharing a friendly smile, Kenny makes a difference in so many lives here. Our residents aren’t just getting stronger physically — they’re building confidence, friendships, and joy, thanks to his efforts.

Kenny, we can’t thank you enough for everything you do. You are truly the heart of our fitness program, and we’re so lucky to have you.

🧠🥊 Finding Strength, Support & Joy — Together

This month’s Rock Steady Support Group was truly special. Our very own Harold Kurstedt, a resident, experienced author, and proud Rock Steady Boxer, shared his personal journey with Parkinson’s in a heartfelt and inspiring presentation.

Harold also introduced a powerful resource he wrote, a book titled “My Life with Parkinson’s” — which offers awareness and a hopeful, practical outlook on living with Parkinson’s. Everyone in attendance received a copy, and the room was filled with encouragement, shared experience, and deep connection.

One quote Harold shared during his talk really stuck with us:

“If it’s not fun, don’t do it. Do you know how fun Rock Steady is? Find the fun and focus on it. You get what you focus on. Every challenge has pros and cons — if you focus on the pros, you’ll experience the pros. So, guess what happens when you choose the cons?...... I choose to focus on the pros.”

That mindset captures the very heart of Rock Steady Boxing — a program that empowers people with Parkinson’s to stay strong, stay positive, and stay connected through movement and community.

We’re so grateful to Harold for his insight, leadership, and example — and proud to support programs and people that bring energy, purpose, and optimism to life every day.
