The History of Blackwell Hospital By Pamela North
Our community’s hospital began construction in 1953 and was opened on February 27, 1955. It was a four story concrete building with 64 beds with an adjacent two-story convent and a school of practical nursing operated by the Felician Sisters and known as Blackwell General Hospital. Over 400 practical nurses graduated from this school through 1971. In January of 1975, Blackwell General Hospital went through a transition as the Sisters of St. Joseph assumed management and ownership. Efforts by the Sisters to consolidate inpatient care with Ponca City Hospital and to only offer outpatient services at Blackwell were met with resistance by Blackwell citizens and on January 1, 1986, the Sisters donated the property, building, and equipment to Blackwell Hospital Trust Authority. Baptist Health Care Corporation (which was then called Integris Heath) worked with the Hospital Trust and the citizens of Blackwell and a lease was signed to manage Blackwell Regional Hospital. In 1988 the hospital was remodeled and a new 3 story wing was constructed. Then in 2010, a much needed five room emergency department was built. Then on April 1, 2014, Integris entered into agreement with Health Management Systems to operate 5 of the rural Integris facilities in Oklahoma and Blackwell was one of them. This was our first time operating as a “For profit hospital”. Then on Jan 27, 2014, all HMA Hospitals where merged with the Community Health Systems organization. We were now part of the largest for-profit health organization in the United States and now operated by Community Health Systems (Blackwell, 2015). Then approximately 2 years ago the 10 Oklahoma CHS hospitals, became Alliance Health and another Name change to Alliance Health Blackwell. Then on March 3, 2016, CHS made plans known to close the In Patient department of our hospital and only offer outpatient services, which met with resistance from our community. The community and the Hospital Authority Board said NO. A bond was passed by the community to keep our hospital ALIVE. Mercy stepped in to help us, then Stillwater Medical Center, which is also a city own hospital. On Sept 3, 2016, this hospital began operations as Blackwell Regional Hospital, owned by the Hospital Trust Authority and the Community of Blackwell.
