Michelle Bero, a registered nurse at the Stillwater Medical Center Cardiology Clinic, was recognized as the March of Dimes 2024 Nurse of the Year in public health, ambulatory care, and nursing specialties. With over 20 years of nursing experience, Bero said the title is humbling.

“When I got the email saying I was a finalist, in my mind, I had already won. It means a great deal to be recognized among the best out of nearly 1,000 nominees,” Bero said. “I don’t do this for recognition, so it’s overwhelming to feel noticed alongside such incredible nurses.”

The March of Dimes Nurse of the Year award celebrates nurses who exemplify an extraordinary level of care and compassion in the delivery of patient care services. The award is peer-nominated and open to registered and licensed practical nurses in Oklahoma. Stillwater Medical Center had five finalists in 2024 including Maria Avers in home health, Leah Encinas in surgical services, Jessica Pierce in Cushing family practice, and Suzie Teague in women’s health.

Construction Begins on an Orthopedic Center of Excellence in Stillwater

Stillwater Medical Center breaks ground on an Orthopedic Center of Excellence to streamline and enhance patient care. This 35,688 square-foot facility at the corner of Monroe St. and 6th Ave. will be home to its nationally recognized programs in orthopedic surgery, physical therapy, sports medicine, spine health, and pain management.

“I have goosebumps when I think about the future of this center, it’s patients, and the quality of experiences possible as a result,” said Denise Webber, president and chief executive officer at Stillwater Medical. “This Orthopedic Center of Excellence will allow us to continue to grow and serve this community.”

One week ago today, Stillwater Medical administration, board members, and orthopedic staff came together with construction partners from Nabholz and REES for a groundbreaking ceremony. The building is set to open in summer 2026. The groundbreaking is the culmination of years of preparation and planning under the guidance of the Stillwater Medical Board of Trustees. Gary Clark, vice chairman of the board, spoke at the event.

“As you look at this wonderful facility that we're starting the journey on today, I'm reminded that it's not the buildings that make the difference. It's the people. And we're so very proud of all the people that will be working in this building,” Clark said.

The new facility will bring Stillwater Medical’s orthopedic care under one roof, creating more opportunities for collaboration and seamless patient care connections. The floor plan will include exam rooms, a physical therapy exercise area, imaging rooms, physician offices, and staff/support areas. All these spaces will create opportunities for care providers to connect with and respond to the needs of their patients.

Stillwater Medical ranks among the nation’s top 10% in orthopedic care, achieving a 5-star rating in both total knee replacement and hip fracture treatment from Healthgrades, the #1 site Americans use when searching for a doctor or hospital.

“The Center of Excellence will house our award-winning services all under one roof,” said Dr. Mark Paden, board certified orthopedic surgeon who has practiced in Stillwater for nearly two decades. “It’s going to allow us to streamline and enhance the quality of care we provide.”

Stillwater Medical Center is a not-for-profit, public trust health system committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care to north central Oklahoma. It strives to be responsive to the needs of people in the region and serve those needs in a financially sound manner.

The History of Blackwell Hospital By Pamela North

Our community’s hospital began construction in 1953 and was opened on February 27, 1955. It was a four story concrete building with 64 beds with an adjacent two-story convent and a school of practical nursing operated by the Felician Sisters and known as Blackwell General Hospital. Over 400 practical nurses graduated from this school through 1971. In January of 1975, Blackwell General Hospital went through a transition as the Sisters of St. Joseph assumed management and ownership. Efforts by the Sisters to consolidate inpatient care with Ponca City Hospital and to only offer outpatient services at Blackwell were met with resistance by Blackwell citizens and on January 1, 1986, the Sisters donated the property, building, and equipment to Blackwell Hospital Trust Authority. Baptist Health Care Corporation (which was then called Integris Heath) worked with the Hospital Trust and the citizens of Blackwell and a lease was signed to manage Blackwell Regional Hospital. In 1988 the hospital was remodeled and a new 3 story wing was constructed. Then in 2010, a much needed five room emergency department was built. Then on April 1, 2014, Integris entered into agreement with Health Management Systems to operate 5 of the rural Integris facilities in Oklahoma and Blackwell was one of them. This was our first time operating as a “For profit hospital”. Then on Jan 27, 2014, all HMA Hospitals where merged with the Community Health Systems organization. We were now part of the largest for-profit health organization in the United States and now operated by Community Health Systems (Blackwell, 2015). Then approximately 2 years ago the 10 Oklahoma CHS hospitals, became Alliance Health and another Name change to Alliance Health Blackwell. Then on March 3, 2016, CHS made plans known to close the In Patient department of our hospital and only offer outpatient services, which met with resistance from our community. The community and the Hospital Authority Board said NO. A bond was passed by the community to keep our hospital ALIVE. Mercy stepped in to help us, then Stillwater Medical Center, which is also a city own hospital. On Sept 3, 2016, this hospital began operations as Blackwell Regional Hospital, owned by the Hospital Trust Authority and the Community of Blackwell.
