We had a productive VOSH workshop yesterday! While packing glasses for the next mission trip, we enjoyed meeting new people, sharing stories from past and upcoming journeys, and building new friendships, all in the spirit of improving vision and changing lives.

VOSH volunteers - we are in need of 2 more Optometrists for the Feb 14 to 21 ( date change from original) mission to Antigua Guatemala. We will be working with the organization Common Hope centered in St Paul. They have a clinic and compound on the edge of the city of Antigua. They work all year doing things for the people in the out lying villages.

Common Hope supplies transportation, meals and rooms for a fee of $800 per person. Besides those things the money is used to bus people to the clinic, pay translators and more.

We are each in charge of our own airfare.

Our Lion’s club has donated $500 to help with paying the fees for the boxes of glasses we need to take as luggage.

Have any of you considered asking your local Lion’s club to assist in paying for your expenses? Sight care is a major project of all Lion’s.

Please call with specific questions. We really need commitments soon.

Trip fees will be minimal.

Everyone needs to have VOSH dues up to date.

VOSH MN reminds everyone to protect your eyes while enjoying fireworks this Independence Day.

👉 Never let children handle fireworks.
👉 Wear protective eyewear if you’re lighting fireworks or standing nearby.
👉 Keep a safe distance from all fireworks, even sparklers, which burn at high temperatures.
👉 Seek medical care right away if an eye injury occurs — do not rub or rinse your eye.

Have a fun and safe 4th of July! Let’s keep our vision clear and healthy for all the celebrations to come.

VOSH Minnesota completed another successful mission to San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala from January 24 - February 1, 2025! We were hosted by the Friends of San Lucas Mission (sanlucasmission.org) - an amazing locally-led mission, with wonderful volunteers and staff committed to supporting the San Lucas community!

Our 18-person team, including 7 optometrists, examined 528 patients, distributed 503 pairs of prescription glasses, and 528 pairs of sunglasses. We also ordered 116 pairs of custom prescription glasses for unique prescriptions, and those will be delivered to our patients in the next 1-2 months.

In addition to refractions and distributing glasses, the team focused on providing ocular health assessments on every patient, including IOPs and fundus exams. Our patients with ocular disease will continue to be followed and treated by eyecare teams at the hospital in San Lucas, and we were able to provide our glaucoma patients with a 12 months supply of drops. We are grateful for the Foundation for Saving Sight, for providing continuity of care and treatment for these patients to preserve their vision.

While in San Lucas, in addition to providing eyecare, we visited the towns of Santiago and San Juan la Laguna on Lake Atitlan. We explored Santiago via a tuk-tuk tour, and San Juan la Laguna on foot. Wrapping up our trip, we spent a day in Antigua where team members participated in a variety of activities from a volcano hike, to a chocolate class, to a sunset ATV tour. We also enjoyed the Antigua markets and fabulous restaurants!

We appreciate everyone’s support of our mission to San Lucas. There are wonderful things happening in the San Lucas Mission, hospital and community. We were grateful to be a small part of it, and look forward to providing continued support of this beautiful community in the future!
