What do all of these plants have in common? They are medicinal and are used to support the lymphatic system!!

Lymphatic herbs are used to strengthen, move, or cleanse the lymph and improve function of the spleen. I've found lymphatic herbs to be a great way to reduce unexplainable "lumpies and bumpies" in the body.

All of these herbs grow in the average garden as "weeds" and bloom in Spring, peak time for harvest! These herbs are excellent as fresh teas, but do exceptionally well as a tincture/glycerite.

Large-flowered Beardtongue
(Penstemon grandiflorus)

A native plant whose medicinal uses have been forgotten...not anymore!

Through the power of organoleptics and much research, here is what we've discovered:

Penstemon lifts the heaviness of grief and depression. It opens the chest and relieves chest pain and palpitations. Stagnant digestion with nausea or bloating can also be cleared by this herb. In short, Penstemon moves stuck energy, Qi, or emotions, so that the mind and body can work more smoothly and freely.

You can find this Spring bloomer growing in a prairie near you, but these plants are only for looks. Please harvest responsibly through cultivating your own prairie garden. 🌱🌿🌾

Sometimes, we need to cultivate rare or rare to Nebraska plants for the research project.

We will harvest the small quantity we need for testing and let the rest continue to flower - feeding local pollinators and eventually, going to seed.

This Fall, we will collect seeds and next Spring, we will propagate and plant more of these rare-to-nebraska species.

Wild Bergamot
AKA Beebalm
Monarda fistulosa

One of my absolute favorites for Summer harvest. Flowers are open or about to open soon, which is prime time for picking the top 6 inches of stem, along with some extra leaves.

This herb is great for burns of all kinds:

- sun burn
- fire burn
- burning sensations

Great as a tea, tincture, poultice, herbal bath, and even a salve! Wild Bergamot is also great for yeast/candida, fungus, and mold exposure.

Meet Liverwort - Conocephalum conicum

A fun tidbit about old common names for herbs - plants used to be named for how they are used medicinally

For those of you that don't know, the term "wort" in liverwort, lungwort, etc. simply stands for "herb". So with a name like Liverwort, this plant is an herb that supports liver function in some way. Same with other herbs: lungwort supports the respiratory system, motherwort supports mother's/women's health, woundwort is helpful for healing wounds.

This particular Liverwort species has been traditionally used for cooling and cleansing the liver, said "to be good for any liver issue", helps soothe urinary tract issues, helps to close stubborn unhealed wounds, and helps to strengthen and protect the liver.

Gleditsia triachanthos - thorned honey locust

Although many of the plants and trees around us appear to be asleep still, they are all gearing up for flowers and leaves over the next few weeks. The juices are flowing inside and they stir life back into the barks and buds of many local plants.

After carefully identifying the specimen, taking reference photos, and geo-locating the harvested materials, we are officially starting the native plant research project!

From Gleditsia, we are tincturing the young (but not newest) bark and the fresh thorns (the red/brown thorns, not the grey ones - see photos).

This same day, we also harvested Sycamore bark and Catalpa bark. Looking for some Spring ephemerals next!

➡️ From a pile of dirt to a certified pollinator habitat...our newest addition to the gardens will be most beneficial - the Prairie.

We are utilizing our Prairie garden to better research and understand our native prairie plants. We will cultivate different species to educate our neighbors and ourselves on how the community of prairie plants survive our harsh Nebraska conditions. The Prairie will also be a seed source for understanding different seed germination strategies and to introduce our community to using native plants in landscaping situations.
