If you want beautiful images like this, we need the following:

1. A pocket of fluid in front of baby. This is where great hydration comes in. Start prepping a couple days in advance by increasing your fluids. Without fluid, images are distorted. No way around that.
2. Baby looking up, without extremities blocking the face so pending you’re not diabetic, have something sweet on your way to get baby moving.
3. Placenta placement, especially anterior. When the placenta is covering baby’s face, it’s like a pillow. Just can’t see through it so push those fluids to try and get a separation between the placenta and face.
4. Timing. We can do ultrasound at any week but if you’re wanting to see full face, chubby cheeks about week 28-36

That little glass of orange juice before your ultrasound appointment might do more than you think. Many expectant parents find that having a small sweet drink, such as orange juice, shortly before a scan can encourage their baby to move around a bit more, making it easier for the sonographer to capture clearer images.

A more active baby can sometimes mean better chances of seeing tiny movements, little kicks, facial expressions, or even getting a clearer view when your baby has been hiding in an awkward position. This can be especially helpful during anatomy scans or when you are hoping to get a good glimpse for keepsake photos.

Orange juice is often chosen because the natural sugars may give your baby a brief burst of energy. Some parents also combine this with drinking cold water, having a light snack, or gently walking before the appointment. Of course, every baby is different. Some little ones become very active, while others may still decide it is the perfect time for a nap.

It is important not to overdo it. A small glass is usually enough, and if you have been advised to limit sugar intake during pregnancy, especially with conditions like gestational diabetes, it is best to follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations.

Pregnancy is full of small tips and tricks that parents pass along to one another, and while not every method works for every family, sometimes the simplest ideas can make those precious ultrasound moments even more memorable.
