❄️ WINTER STORM COMMUNITY CHECK-IN
Please Check on the Elderly & Those Living Alone
With winter weather approaching, we’re asking our community to check on elderly neighbors, disabled individuals, and anyone living alone, especially those who receive homecare services.
During snow and ice storms, caregivers may not be able to travel safely for a few days. A quick call, text, or knock on the door can truly make a difference.
✅ QUICK CHECK-IN QUESTIONS
• Do they have heat?
• Do they have food & water for 3–4 days?
• Do they have their medications?
• Do they have flashlights & batteries?
• Is their phone charged? Do they have a way to charge it?
• Do they need help contacting family?
✅ WINTER STORM EMERGENCY PREP LIST (3–4 DAYS)
FOOD & WATER
• Easy-to-eat meals (no cooking required)
• Snacks and ready-to-eat foods
• Bottled water
HEAT & WARMTH
• Blankets / warm clothing / extra socks
• Keep doors closed; block drafts safely
POWER OUTAGE ITEMS
• Flashlights
• Extra batteries
• Battery-powered radio
• Phone charger / portable power bank
MEDICATION & MEDICAL NEEDS
• 3–7 days of medications (if possible)
• Medical supplies (briefs, wipes, gloves, pads)
• Printed list of medications and emergency contacts
SAFETY & COMMUNICATION
• Smoke detector / carbon monoxide detector working
• Emergency numbers posted
• Identify a family member/neighbor to check in daily
🫁 IMPORTANT: FOR CLIENTS WHO REQUIRE OXYGEN
If you or your loved one uses oxygen, please prepare ahead of the storm:
BACKUP OXYGEN
• Call your oxygen provider TODAY
• Confirm backup oxygen tanks are available
• Ask how long backup oxygen will last at current flow rate
POWER OUTAGE PLAN
If using an oxygen concentrator:
• Keep batteries charged
• Confirm battery duration
• Have a car charger/power option if available
SAFETY
• NO smoking around oxygen
• Keep oxygen away from candles, fireplaces, and gas stoves
WHEN TO CALL 911
Seek emergency help immediately for:
• Severe trouble breathing
• Bluish lips/face
• Confusion or fainting
• Chest pain
