This Black History Month, we honor pioneers who shaped the foundation of mental health equity.

Dr. Inez Beverly Prosser was the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in psychology. Her groundbreaking research examined how racism and inequality impact the mental health and identity development of Black children — helping spark early conversations about school desegregation in the United States.

Her legacy reminds us that advocating for equity in education and mental health has always been connected.

This Black History Month, we honor trailblazers who challenged bias in psychology.

Dr. Robert Lee Williams II earned his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and went on to create the Black Intelligence Test of Cultural Homogeneity challenging biased IQ testing and disproving harmful myths about Black intelligence.

He was also a founding member of the National Association of Black Psychologists, helping pave the way for culturally grounded psychological research and care.

Equity in mental health begins with equity in research.

This Black History Month, we honor leaders advancing equity in mental health and public health.

Dr. Hope Landrine, professor at East Carolina University, has dedicated her career to researching health disparities impacting African American communities. With over $11 million in research funding and groundbreaking work on cancer disparities, her scholarship continues to push conversations around equity, culture, and care forward.

Representation in research matters. Equity in mental health matters.

Did you know that Black adults are 20% more likely to experience serious psychological distress, yet only 1 in 3 who need mental health care receive it? These disparities highlight the urgent need for culturally responsive support, education, and access to services.

At NAMI Georgia, we are committed to ensuring every community has the tools and resources needed to prioritize mental health. Through programs like NAMI Sharing Hope, we provide free, culturally centered education that empowers individuals and families to talk openly about mental health, reduce stigma, and connect with support in a safe, community‑led space.
