Please help us wish Marian a very special 101st Birthday!
Marian was born in Exeter and grew up on a farm after moving there at age four. The oldest of six children, she and the youngest sibling are the only surviving members of their family. Two of her brothers proudly served as WWII veterans. Marian’s career began as a seamer in a knitting mill, followed by her service in the Army Air Force Medic Corps. After her military service, she dedicated herself to her home and family as a housewife.
She reflects on living through the Great Depression, remembering how her loving parents always made sure the children were fed and dressed. Her family only bought what they couldn’t grow, and her father shared extra produce with neighbors in need. When asked about the biggest changes she’s seen in the world, she points to those humble times and the strength of community.
Marian insists there’s no secret to living 101 years, just taking it one day at a time. Her proudest accomplishments include her life in the church and her years of foster care. She and her husband fostered 115 children over two decades, including 69 newborns placed with adoptive families. Her deep roots with Spies Church run generations deep, her great-grandfather helped build it in 1763.
She fondly remembers enjoying cakes and pies growing up, especially wet bottom shoo-fly pie, a family favorite. Marian treasures the friendships in her life, appreciating the kindness of those who never expect anything in return, but she always gives what she can. Today, she’s most grateful for the life she’s had, saying, “There were some dark spots on the road, but keep patience and they will evaporate. Try not to go into turmoil over small things.” When asked for advice to younger generations, she laughs and says, “They don’t listen anyway—but listen to the good elders in your life.”
