It finally happened… we all got to walk those wonderful halls of Reading High once again! ❤️🖤

Our residents were filled with nostalgia as they stepped back into their old school, remembering the laughter, friendships, and milestones that shaped their youth.

We waved to current students who greeted their fellow Red Knights with big smiles and warm hearts. The cafeteria may now be a library, but the gym still echoes with memories, and those lockers and hallways brought everyone right back to the best days of their lives.

A huge thank-you to the Class of 1990 for making this incredible moment possible and thank you Chris for making this possible!

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!

Mildred Loeper, Class of 1945
Mildred excelled in Spanish and won an award for her achievements, inspired by her favorite teacher, Martha Morello and her principal at the time was Mr. Master.

She fondly recalls walking with friends after school to the Luden’s Factory, where they packed cough drops, and she was also an active member of the Literary Council. Mildred also remembers going to Screpsi’s and for ice cream nearby. Each day, Mildred walked 13–15 blocks to school, always dressed in dresses with bobby socks, never slacks, as was the style of the time.

She continues to be a lifelong volunteer with a passion for teaching adults, Mildred’s contributions to the community are remarkable. She volunteered with the Berks County Senior Citizens Office, working on the Second Wind newspaper, and with the Reading Beautification Department, helping to keep city streets clean and organizing benefits. She served with Meals on Wheels, tutored adults at RACC, and touched countless lives through adult education.

Her service earned her the 1997 President’s Award with Reading Area Community College, making her the first recipient who was neither an employee nor a student, honored solely for her extensive volunteer work as an Adult Tudor. Many of her students became lifelong friends, friendships she continues to cherish to this day.

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!

Suzy Evans, Class of 1950
Suzy graduated from Reading High School in 1950 and went on to attend West Chester State Teachers College, where she studied Elementary Education. She taught for 30 years, six in public education and 24 in Nursery School.

She fondly remembers taking the train to New York and enjoying a cruise up the Hudson to West Point. Her principal was Mr. Earl Masters, and she recalls high school as a wonderful time filled with great friends and special memories. One of her favorite places was Yatron’s Ice Cream on 13th Street.

Suzy’s favorite teacher was Mr. Dietrich, who taught with creativity and kindness. She also loved her French class with Miss Schwenke. Beyond the classroom, Suzy was active in Y-Teens and the Fellowship Club, where she helped children with homework, played piano, and taught them songs to sing. Reading’s big rival during basketball games at the time was York High School.

She describes her school years as a time of close friendships, and community spirit. Suzy also participated in the Rainbow Club and sang in her church choir, enriching her life with music and service.

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!

Joan Becker, Class of 1953
Joan graduated from Reading High, class of 1953. She walked to and from school every day and fondly recalls her class trip, a boat ride around Philadelphia, instead of the usual trip to West Point or Annapolis. After her prom, her parents surprised her by taking her and her friends to the shore, a memory she still treasures.

Joan’s fondest memory of Reading High was the library staff, who left such an impression that she pursued it as a career. After graduation, she attended Kutztown University to study library science, she then worked as an assistant librarian for over a year at Reading High School. She later became the first librarian at the Muhlenberg Community Library, where she proudly served for over 12 years, and assisted with reading programs throughout the years.

During her school years, she was an active member of the Cosmopolitan Club, where she enjoyed learning about languages, costumes, and cultural traditions of France and Germany. She was also a member of the Civic Pride Club, Y-Teens, Future Teachers of America, Bowling and Library Club!

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!

Carolyn McDonough, Class of 1956
Carolyn was active throughout her high school years, serving on the Baccalaureate Committee with nine of her classmates and friends. She was also a proud member of Y-Teens, where she helped prepare Christmas toys for underprivileged children, and the Fellowship Club, which promoted friendship and brotherhood within the Castle.

Some events during her senior year, was the class trip to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Prom at the Reading Country Club.

After graduation, Carolyn married the love of her life, Wh**ey, and together they shared 64 years of marriage. Though she never finished her plans of becoming a nurse, Carolyn found joy in being a devoted stay-at-home mom, alongside many of the neighborhood ladies of that time. Later, when her children were in high school, she worked at Penn Optical on South 4th Street as a switchboard operator.

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!

Mary Ann Weidner, Class of 1957
Mary Ann proudly graduated from Reading High School in 1957. After graduation, she continued her education achieving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology at Albright as well as attending St. Joseph Hospital School of Medical Technology. She also achieved her Masters Degree in Clinical Microbiology at Thomas Jefferson University. She went on to dedicate 26 years to laboratory services, leaving a meaningful mark in her field.
She fondly remembers the fun of the Reading Fair, the Wilson Line cruises, and her class trip to the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Sports were a big part of her high school years; she loved attending basketball and football games and recalls spending time at Screpsi’s across the street.

Her favorite teachers included Mr. Starr (Physics) and Mr. Schaich (Chemistry), and she especially enjoyed Drivers Education, wishing it was still taught today. While there were no uniforms, she recalls how all the ladies wore dresses, skirts, and blouses. At the time, Reading’s big rival was Pottsville, playing the big game on Thanksgiving.

Mary Ann was an active student, involved in Hall Monitoring Club, Y-Teens, GAA (Girls Athletic Association), CPC (Civic Pride Club), and NHS (National Honor Society), and she proudly served as President of the Arts and Crafts Club. The Class of 1957 commencement motto, “In youth we learn, in age we understand”, which still resonates with her.

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!

C. Fred Wroble, Class of 1958
Fred graduated from Reading High School in 1958. Like many of his classmates, he often spent time at Screpsi’s and Penn Supreme, where he also worked as a busboy. He delivered newspapers as well, balancing work with his studies.

His principal at the time was Mr. Levan Smith. After graduation, Fred pursued his goal of becoming a barber, traveling each morning by train to Philadelphia for classes. His favorite subject in school was English, taught by Mr. Luckenbill, whose lessons left a lasting impression.

While none of his immediate family attended Reading High (they were students at Central Catholic, Reading’s biggest rival at the time), Fred proudly recalls his own Red Knight days. He enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, and football at the playground, staying active and building friendships along the way.

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!

John Zuber, Class of 1962
John graduated from Reading High School in 1962 and went on to pursue a career as an auto mechanic. His principal at the time was Mr. Hoch.

One of his fondest memories was his senior prom, and like many classmates, he often hung out at Screpsi’s, the popular student spot. John’s favorite teacher was also his history teacher and basketball coach, who not only taught him but also his cousins.
John was especially focused on auto shop and participated in intramural basketball, where his team was humorously called Rusty Nuts. While many students dreaded civics class, John enjoyed it and appreciated the subject.

He was also musically inclined, playing the horn and was in a rock band, which added fun and creativity to his high school experience. His style reflected the era, jeans or black pants with pink pinstripes and funky shirts. At the time, Reading’s big rival was Central Catholic.

John’s daughter later attended Reading School District as well, carrying on the family tradition.

Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!

At Keystone Villa at Fleetwood, we celebrate the unique strengths that every generation brings. From wisdom and resilience to creativity and vision, each resident adds something special to our community.

We’re excited to highlight our Red Knight Alumni! Chris Rodriguez, our Dining Service Director, had the wonderful idea of sharing his Reading High School pride with our Red Knight Alumni residents. Together with Chris and a current Red Knight, our residents will tour Reading High to relive their glory days and reconnect with cherished memories.

Stay tuned as we share stories from our Red Knight Alumni spanning from 1990 all the way back to 1945, a true testament to the lasting spirit of Red Knights across the decades.

Christopher Rodriguez- Reading High School, Class of 1990
Chris graduated from Reading High School in 1990, carrying with him a passion for culinary arts that began before he was even 15 years old.
He fondly remembers his class trip to Williamsburg, Virginia, as well as the fun times after football and basketball games when he and his friends would gather at Pizza Italia or McDonald’s on Spring Street. One of his most memorable moments was serving as Class President, where he had the honor of speaking in front of his classmates and their families for graduation at the Geigle Complex. His principal at the time was Mr. Lubas.
Chris attended Vo-Tech for Culinary Arts and, outside of sports, did not join many extra clubs. He played basketball and football, though he admits that science class was never his favorite subject.
Reading High School has been especially meaningful for Chris because it has been part of his entire family’s story. His parents, brothers, cousins, and even his own children all attended Reading High, creating a legacy of Red Knight pride. He recalls the fashion of the time, cuffed and baggy pants with bright, Miami Vice–style shirts. Chris is still passionate about Wilson being Reading High’s biggest rival.
