Resident Spotlight: Joan B.
Joan B. has been a beloved member of our community since 2019. Originally from Reading, Joan made the decision to move in after the passing of her husband in 2014, when maintaining her home on her own became too difficult. From the moment she arrived, she felt happy and at peace, sharing that what she loves most is the people and how well everyone gets along.
Joan built a meaningful career as a librarian and proudly served as the very first librarian at the Muhlenberg Library. She later found great fulfillment working as a Title I reading assistant, helping children develop a love for reading. Service has always been close to her heart. She spent many years on her church council and devoted an incredible 60 years as a Sunday school teacher, guiding generations of children through faith and education.
An only child, Joan created a beautiful family of her own. She has three children, fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Family picnics around the holidays remain one of her favorite traditions, and she credits her late husband as the greatest influence in her life.
Joan enjoys reading, doing puzzles, and crocheting, and she stays very active within the community. She participates in devotional group, Wheel of Fortune, and is a proud member of the Rowdy Seniors Club. She also helps lead two resident-run activities— “As the Page Turns” and Trivia with Babs. Since moving in, she’s even tried new things like co****le, which she found to be so much fun.
She listens to all kinds of music except heavy metal, and has a special fondness for comfort foods like creamed chipped beef. Some of her most treasured memories are the lighthouse trips she and her husband took together, especially visiting the Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City and watching its restoration over the years.
Joan believes happiness comes from being content with what you have and always trying to find the good in any situation. Children always make her smile, and what she treasures most about living here is the kindness of both residents and staff, who she says go above and beyond every day.
Her heartfelt message to anyone considering a move: “Welcome! You’ll have fun!”
