Itโ€™s that time of year again!

Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner. You know what that means... Yard work!

The noise level of a lawnmower is about 90dB, which the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends wearing hearing protection. This goes for other outdoor chores such as w**d whacking, leaf blowing, hedge clipping, etc. Make sure you wear earplugs or earmuffs and that they fit properly to protect your hearing.

Stay safe out there! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Treatment for tinnitus depends on whether there is an underlying cause. Your doctor may be able to reduce your symptoms by treating the underlying condition but there is never any guarantee that it will go away completely.

Here are some helpful tips you can use to reduce the volume and manage your tinnitus.

1. Decrease your exposure to loud sounds
2. Wear ear plugs when excessive noise is unavoidable
3. Clean up your diet: Caffeine, sugar, salt, and alcohol are known to increase tinnitus. Processed foods, dairy, and gluten can also affect it.
4. Stress is a well known trigger of tinnitus. Go for walks outside, meditate, breathing exercises, yoga, acupuncture etc.

There are many ways to help manage your tinnitus and what helps you may not help someone else. Listen to your body to find out what works and what does not work for you!

What helps you manage your tinnitus?

Did you know you can test how good your hearing aid battery is without having a battery tester?

From about a foot above a flat, hard surface like a desk or table, drop the battery. If the battery bounces up and down like a bouncy ball, it's dead. If the battery hits the table and stays without bouncing, its full!

Let me know if you have tried this fun trick!

Ever wonder how long your hearing aid batteries should last?

Every hearing aid is different and every wearer has a variety of listening environments - not everyone's batteries will last the same amount of time. The above table shows an average of how long each battery size should last.

If your battery lifespan is significantly less, consider this: Where are you buying your batteries and are you opening up the battery door when your hearing aids are not in use?

The battery expiration date does not always determine if your battery is good or not. A lot of different factors could drain your batteries before you even purchase them. I recommend trying batteries from different stores to see which one gives you the most time.

Always open the battery door when your hearing aids are not in use. If not, they will be using the battery 24/7 and your batteries will die within a couple of days.

If you do both of these and you feel your hearing aid batteries are dying sooner than average, bring your hearing aids to your hearing care professional to make sure your they are functioning properly.

How long do your batteries typically last?

๐Ÿ›‘ STOP saying NEVER MIND ๐Ÿ›‘

If someone with a hearing loss misses something in a conversation and asks you to repeat it, do not dismiss them and say "never mind" or "it's not important." It's rude and excludes them from the conversation.

Instead, repeat what you said in a way they can hear you or rephrase it in a way they can understand. If you're in the middle of a conversation and are unable to repeat it say, "I can't tell you right now but remind me later and I will tell you." This is much more respectful and inclusive than saying "never mind."

Has this ever happened to you? How was the situation handled?

Lately I have had a few patients tell me they accidentally got into the shower with their hearing aids on and asked - what should I do if I get my hearing wet? ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Hearing aids are water resistant but not water proof. You want to ensure you remove your hearing aids before getting in the shower or going for a swim. But, we know hearing aids are more comfortable these days and accidents can happen.

Hereโ€™s what you should do:
1. Quickly & Safely remove your hearing aids from water.
2. Remove the batteries from your hearing aids if they have them.
3. Shake out some excess water.
4. Dehumidify: place in a bag of rice over night.

** Never Ever put your hearing aids in the microwave or set a hairdryer to them. Heat will melt your hearing aids and destroy them!**

Check out the latest blog post for more information about these steps & let me know in the comments below how you got your hearing aids wet!

Hearing loss as you age is gradual and you may not notice it at first. These are just a few of the early signs of hearing loss and typically those who are closest to us such as family and friends are the first to express their concern.

If you are experiencing any of these, it would be wise to have your hearing checked BEFORE it starts to interfere with your daily life. It might just be ear wax! Unfortunately, age-related hearing loss cannot be reversed or fixed BUT there are many benefits to taking care of it sooner rather than later. Use it or lose it.

Who do you choose?

This is a question I hear a lot, whatโ€™s the difference between an audiologist and a hearing instrument specialist/dispenser? How do you know which one is better?

Both professionals are qualified to dispense hearing aids and adjust them to your specific needs. The main difference is that an audiologist has an advanced degree and is an expert in all aspects of hearing healthcare.

When choosing the best service for your hearing healthcare consider these difference to determine the best fit for you. Contact the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed about the office you are considering. Ask friends and family or your local Facebook group for a recommendation. Youโ€™re ears will thank you!
