Thyra J. Edwards was a world lecturer, journalist, labor organizer, womenοΏ½s rights advocate, and civil rights activist. She was highly respected by her peers and throughout the community where she provided services. Edwards was often heralded as οΏ½one of the most outstanding Black women in the world.οΏ½

Edwards worked with an Unemployed Council to actively protest apartment evictions. She was attracted by their ability to build alliances with other groups to stop the evictions, and by their position on race and labor, emphasizing Black and white unity.

By the end of World War II she was the executive director of the Congress of American Women.

Throughout her life, Thyra Edwards maintained an interest in the condition of oppressed working-class people worldwide. Concerned also with the plight of women and children, in 1953 Edwards organized the first Jewish child care program in Rome to assist children who had been victims of the Holocaust. Thank you Thyra for advocating for peopleοΏ½s rights and working to keep people housed!

Celebrating a pioneering force in psychology: α΄…Κ€. ᴇ. α΄‹Ιͺα΄›α΄„Κœ α΄„ΚœΙͺΚŸα΄…κœ± (1937-1993) 🌟
Dr. Childs wasn't just a psychologist - she was a revolutionary who transformed mental healthcare through radical inclusion and accessibility. With her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1972), she:
✨ Created a sliding-scale practice from her Oakland home
✨ Prioritized care for marginalized communities
✨ Championed LGBTQ+ rights in mental health
✨ Fought to remove discriminatory practices in psychology
✨ Offered innovative group therapy focused on community healing
Her vision of accessible, culturally-sensitive mental healthcare continues to inspire our practice at Tools for Success Counseling Services. Like Dr. Childs, we believe in:

Meeting clients where they are
Offering flexible payment options
Providing both in-person and Telehealth services
Understanding the impact of systemic barriers on mental health
Creating safe spaces for ALL

π”‰π”―π”žπ”«π” π”¦π”° ℭ𝔒𝔠𝔦𝔩 𝔖𝔲π”ͺ𝔫𝔒𝔯 was an American leader in education reform. He is commonly referred to as the "Father of Black Psychology." He is primarily known for being the first African American to receive a Ph.D. in psychology.

On June 14, 1920, Francis Cecil Sumner became the first Black to receive a Ph.D. degree in psychology. Sumner's first teaching job was at Wilberforce University as a professor of philosophy and psychology in the fall of 1920. In the summer of 1921, he also taught at Southern University in Louisiana. In 1921, Sumner accepted a position at West Virginia Collegiate Institute. Sumner was married twice; his first wife was Frances H. Hughston in 1922, and his second wife was Nettie M. Broker in 1946. Sumner had no children from his two marriages. After seven years of being on the staff and writing many controversial articles involving the criticisms of colleges and universities and their treatment of African Americans and endorsing views of W.E.B. Dubois and Booker T. Washington, Sumner resigned on August 31, 1928.

Sumner left West Virginia and went on to Howard University and became the acting chairman of the psychology department. On January 12, 1954, Dr. Francis Cecil Sumner died of a heart attack outside his home in Washington, D.C to become a Psychologist!
