When you’re making New Year’s Resolutions this year, why not make some resolutions to help your mental health?

So often, we end up setting goals that are vague, unrealistic, or heavily influenced by others. When we fail in keeping these resolutions, we’re left feeling guilty and disappointed in ourselves.

Break this cycle by putting your mental health first in 2022!

Every year, people stockpile candy and costumes, getting ready for a night of spooky fun and treats. But alongside the monsters and superheroes, you may see something else in the costume aisle. Straight jackets and torn scrubs are the components of choice for costumes such as ‘mental health patient’ or ‘psycho.’ You may even see parts of haunted houses decorated to look like a ‘mental health ward.’

It’s natural for people to find the unknown, uncontrollable aspects of life scary. But these offensive and derisive portrayals of people struggling with mental health issues only furthers the public’s perception and stigma of mental illness.

Be safe out there this Halloween, and remember that mental illness is not a costume!

It’s easy to understand recovery from a physical injury or illness. But when it comes to mental illness, recovery is a bit more complicated. For many people who live with a mental illness, recovery as a concept is more about staying in control of their symptoms as opposed to full symptom resolution.

There is no cure for mental illnesses, though there are many treatments that work to counteract the chemical imbalances in the brain that cause mental illness. When discussing mental illness, it can help to view recovery as a process as opposed to a destination.

Over the past two years, there have been steadily rising rates of mental illness around the world. Unfortunately, the treatment gaps for mental health disorders are also on the rise - 50% of people with mental health disorders in high-income countries don’t have access to care.

Take the time today to help spread information and awareness so we can all help create a better world that will give help to those who need it most.

Over the past 3 decades, ketamine has been used to treat a slew of treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders, as well as post-operative and chronic pain management.

While ketamine isn’t considered a first option for treating psychiatric disorders or chronic pain management, it’s an excellent option after standard treatments fail.

But what makes ketamine different from other traditional antidepressants?

To start with, ketamine can take effect within a few hours, as opposed to traditional SSRIs that take weeks to start working.

Ketamine also regenerates the synaptic connections between brain cells that are damaged by stress, depression, and pain.

This means it can treat the root causes behind mental and chronic pain disorders, as opposed to simply combating the symptoms.

It’s a well-known fact that academic stress can lead to poorer wellbeing and an increased likelihood of developing anxiety or depression.

But this can lead to a terrible cycle where being stressed makes you perform poorly in school and going to school makes you stressed.

How are you supposed to stop this negative spiral?

One easy thing to try is breathing exercises. Breathing deeply can bring in more oxygen to your brain and lower your heart rate. An easy exercise is counting to six while you inhale, then counting to six while you exhale.

There are many easy, short-term ways to help yourself get through day-to-day struggles of academia. But never hesitate to seek out support or treatment!

August 30 is National Grief Awareness Day.

It’s an entire day dedicated to raising awareness, offering support, and connecting mourners to the resources they need to cope with their losses.

Today is an important day to offer support to a grieving friend, engage in self-care, and post to social media.

Together, we can create safe spaces to educate ourselves and help each other through the struggles of life.

You may have heard that pets can help you cope with stress - but did you know that this isn’t limited to just dogs and cats?

Smaller mammals such as rabbits or hamsters can be a furry companion when limited space is an issue. Birds are excellent for social interaction when you feel isolated. Reptiles and insects add structure and routine to a hectic lifestyle. Even simply watching fish swim around an aquarium can assist in reducing muscle tension and lowering your pulse rate.

Regardless of type of animal, the feelings of love and being needed by a pet can elevate your serotonin and dopamine levels.
