For 39 days, Steven has been receiving care for lymphoma on floor 16E at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. But amid the IV poles and monitors, something magical happened: Steven shared a secret talent.

Steven mentioned to his nurse manager Alyssa that he could play the guitar. That small detail sparked a big idea. Alyssa brought in an acoustic guitar, and the moment Steven held it, his eyes welled up with tears of joy. With a gentle strum, his hospital room transformed into a stage filled with warmth and melody.

But the surprises didn’t stop there. Steven created an impromptu concert that lifted spirits across the unit.

On Thanksgiving, we are grateful for the patients we’re privileged to care for. We’re grateful for our compassionate team members. We’re grateful for music and moments of connection. And we’re especially grateful for moments like these when it all comes together.

The flowers I have always loved now smell sweeter, and I can even smell the life growing within them. Laughter feels heavier, love feels deeper, and the smallest moments carry the most meaning. Life all of a sudden is so much deeper and joyful; it’s the most beautiful thing. Now, instead of rushing, I take my time and find beauty in everything.”
