The trials and tribulations of growing your own organic food: These are our burpless cucumber plant that we grew from seed early this summer. We put a trellis for this to grow on and used bread ties to attach the vines to the trellis. This is a series of pictures showing the progression of the cucumber plant.

Between a mixture of components including our soil quality, time put in, and weather. We personally take our supplements to ensure we are getting the nutrients we need. Standard Process has improved their soil quality by 43% in the last 90 years.

Grow a Garden with Us🌱🧑‍🌾🌈☀️

There are so many opportunities to learn about gardening. We recently learned how to grow under cover to trick our plants into thinking it’s warm. We learned this from a seed company we use. It’s called and they host webinars to inform people what they know about gardening. Johnnyseeds.com has their webinars downloaded on their site and they are worth the watch. We are so thankful to have such a large community of gardeners to learn from.

Please comment if you have any questions or tips, let’s learn from each other!

🌱 Trellising Tomato Plants
In the series of picture we show you the development of the tomato jungle. The plants tend to get disorganized due to regular weather patterns.

To fix this we trellis the plants to a wooden stake. After putting the stake in the ground (avoiding roots as much as possible) we take some string and wrap the string around twice on both the plant and the stake. When choosing where to put the string on the plant choose a spot on the stem where it is branching( a node).

🌱Planting
We brought in lots of help from our community to help plant our garden. Which we greatly appreciate! We planted from seed and from some starts from patients!

In the last two pictures we have a string through the row we are working on and we dig a small ditch. In the last picture we put some peat moss down to allow the roots to grow into the soft peat moss and so that the seedling can come through the soil. We also put some fertilizer down to give our soil more nutrients. The fertilizer or soil amendments that we utilized are organic and primarily kelp or seaweed, alfalfa, fish meal, and of course lots of compost!

After these steps you put your seeds down. Usually there is directions on the back of pack of seeds that should be followed for the best results.

🌱Soil Quality
Our soil in the community garden is clay based and doesn’t allow small seedlings to sprout, we decided to put some organic top soil on what was tilled.

Soil quality is important to a garden because the soil gives the plants nutrients, the more nutrients in the soil the more nutrients will be in your produce.

Shout out to Randy who helped us till and lay the top soil on the community garden. www.randysrototilling.com

Take advantage of your local produce, this produce holds the most nutrients because
produce that’s local, ripens on the plant, and it’s during the ripening process is when the nutrients form. Produce that is not local is picked when it’s not ripe, so it has way less nutrients.

We have found local produce , Bloomington Farmer’s Market, and . We also got free tickets from a patient to the garden parade for Hilltop, we greatly appreciated the trip!
