Forced false positivity imposes positive thinking as the only solution to problems, and demands that a person avoid negative thinking or expressing negative emotions.

This type of response to individuals in pain lacks empathy and divides us from genuine connection with others.

If we respond with forced positivity it is more a reflection of our own inability to sit with pain. When we demand positivity from others we offer insufficient support or make loved ones feel stigmatized and judged.

True connection and healing comes from sitting along side our people in their pain without trying to fix and accepting their reality even if it’s different than our own.

Hurt people hurt people.

I’ve heard addiction called the disease of emotions. If we ourselves can not sit with pain, then we stand little chance of co-regulating with the ones we love. We see our defense mechanisms rise up when we don’t feel safe and often hurt those around us.

Although process addiction and substance addiction are different disorders, they frequently co-occur, which is referred to as a dual diagnosis.

For the best chance of long-term recovery, both conditions must be treated at the same time.

All addictions share similar characteristics, especially the inability of the addicted person to stop or limit compulsive behavior, even when it negatively impacts many facets of their life.

We do many of these behaviors routinely so it is important to check in with yourself and these signs of Process Addictions:

1.Spending an abnormal amount of time thinking about or actively involved in the behavior, often to the exclusion of other activities, responsibilities, or personal or professional relationships.

2.Using the behavior as an escape from negative emotions.

3. Continuing the behavior despite its adverse effect on mental and physical health, interpersonal relationships, work or school, and other responsibilities.

4. Compulsively seeking the “high” the behavior delivers. Over time, increased frequency of the behaviors are needed to achieve the desired effect.

5.Experiencing withdrawal. With a substance addiction, the addicted person experiences physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms once the substance is no longer consumed. When a process-addicted person is unable to engage in addictive behavior, they may experience severe mental distress.

If you believe that you, or a loved one, are struggling with a behavioral addiction, the good news is that treatment is a powerful tool! Learning how to manage the behavior and begin to address the issues caused by the long-term behaviors begins with intensive and integrated treatment.

Addiction is a connection problem. It’s primal for humans to crave connection. Our ancestors knew they would survive longer if they belonged to a tribe. Today, that feeling of not belonging, not being enough, can leave a gaping hole often filled with addiction.

In recovery there is hope, not feeling so alone, support, and accountability through connection with others.

From Overdose Lifeline…

Black Balloon Day has become a national and international event, bringing awareness to overdose deaths. As with many things with the opioid epidemic, Black Balloon Day began with a family’s loss. Diane and Lauren Hurley began Black Balloon Day in remembrance of Greg Tremblay. Tremblay, a father of four, is the son-in-law of Diane and brother-in-law of Lauren and died of an overdose when he was 38 years old on March 6, 2015.

Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic. Americans are more likely to die of an opioid overdose than they are from a car accident or by a gun. Black Balloon Day helps create awareness around the important issue of providing support to those struggling with substance use disorder and their loved ones.

*Save the planet—release a virtual balloon.

Overdose Lifeline has made a practice to release virtual balloons each year on and we encourage everyone to do the same. If you wish to participate and share your loved one’s name and/or story this year on March 6, simply follow the steps outlined below.

Maybe you’re ready to commit to full sobriety and want help in maintaining it, or maybe you simply want to feel more in control of your substance use.

The fact is, a healthy relationship with drugs and alcohol looks different for everyone, and substance use counseling can help you decide what’s right for you.

You don’t have to meet DSM-5 criteria to reach out for the help you deserve to live the life you want.

Those of us with insecure attachment who greatly fear intimacy frequently use drugs and alcohol as an escape technique rather than facing our emotional pain. We see this the often with avoidant attachment types.

A lack of safe, close relationships can lead to isolation and dysfunctional view of self.

Individuals who feel distrust in romantic relationships also show an increased rate of drug use, as well as those who have attachment anxiety.

Overall, each of these insecure attachment styles ultimately lead to heightened stress driven behaviors that have negative consequences.

In recovery, we focus on healing that encourages a secure attachment style.
