For many, ice represents coldness, hardness, anger, etc. I see an alternate representation: stillness- fluid and moving becomes solid and still; strength- ice can be strong underfoot, allowing you to walk where you never could in warm weather; quiet- the sounds of moving water are gone and the denser cold air means it is quieter.

I find winter both peaceful and energizing. Visiting my favorite nature spots in the coldest part of winter makes me feel a special connection with nature, embracing and experiencing it in every season.

What is your relationship to winter? Do you experience winter depression? Are you energized by the cold? Love it or hate it? Let me know in the comments!

What is your favorite way to enjoy nature? What makes you feel most connected? For me, it’s wild swimming. And this time of year is ideal; there’s a slight chill in the air and water causing the crowds to reduce and wildlife to show up. This morning I swam with a turtle. It kept its distance from me but I stopped every time I looped back to where it was and it was always there, poking its head up out of the lake week. There was also a belted kingfisher flying around. They always feel special to see because they are fast and often gone before you can get a good look at them. I felt a special connection to the water and wildlife during my morning swim.

Share your favorite way to connect with nature in the comments: is it a walk, camping, picnic in the park, etc.? The ways are endless

I am working with Mentaya to help you with getting reimbursed for individual sessions using your out of network benefits

You can go to my website (link in bio) and use their benefits tracker to see if you qualify for reimbursement and for how much.

How it works: If you decide to work with Mentaya, you won’t have to personally deal with your insurance; we have a session, I let submit day and time of session to Mentaya and they take care of submitting the claim to your insurance. You are then reimbursed through your preferred method.

Working with Mentaya is completely optional and I do not benefit from you working with them.

The things you may get to see in your time spent outside. This beautiful male Polyphemus Moth was tough to spot amongst the leaves. In its adult phase, it will live less than one week and is incapable of eating. It will only eat as a caterpillar and will consume 86,000 times its weight before it becomes a pupa.

Have you experienced a total eclipse?

If you have, you know it’s a full sensory experience. It’s disorienting and confusing to our senses. What did you notice? Temperature change? Different sounds? How did the lighting appear to you?

Do you have a sit spot? “A sit spot (or secret spot) is simply a favorite place in nature that you visit regularly to cultivate awareness as you expand your senses and study patterns of local plants, birds, trees, animals, etc.

By choosing one place outside that you visit over and over again, it teaches you to develop the most ancient parts of human awareness and gradually acquire enhanced sensitivity to nature.”

My favorite spots have always been near water. As you spend time there, the wildlife will slowly become more comfortable with your presence. It’s a wonderful feeling to begin feeling like you are friends with the inhabitants of your favorite nature space. I encourage you to find a sit spot and spend time there often. Sit in one place and take in what goes on around you.

The extreme cold had me not wanting to be out in it. I overcame the resistance and allowed myself to experience awe at an almost 11,000 acre lake having frozen over. Experiencing awe gives us the sense of being small and insignificant in comparison to the world around us. The benefit is, it also causes our worries and anxieties to feel smaller and less significant. Where have you experienced awe? Take a moment to reflect on an experience you’ve had with awe.

As the Winter Solstice ushers in the shortest day and longest night of the year, it’s a time to celebrate nature’s cycle. While winter might tempt us to hibernate indoors, spending time outside during this season offers numerous health and mental wellness benefits.

Fresh, crisp air invigorates the body, boosts the immune system, and enhances overall well-being. Sunlight exposure, even in colder months, aids in the production of vitamin D, crucial for bone health and mood regulation.

Engaging in outdoor activities like walking, skiing, or simply enjoying the serene winter landscape can alleviate stress, reduce anxiety, and elevate mood by releasing endorphins and decreasing cortisol levels.

Moreover, the beauty of winter scenery fosters mindfulness, promoting a sense of calm and presence. So, bundle up, step outside, and relish the health-boosting wonders of winter this season!

A lesson in nature: to experience the truly incredible, to witness intense beauty, to find true peace, to experience anything worthwhile, we will have to leave our comfort zone! Could I have seen this sunrise from my window in my warm house, with a hot cup of coffee, sure. But getting out in the cold water allowed me to have a perspective unmatched. I was surrounded by the colors of the sky as they reflected on the water and I reflected on the power of stepping outside of what is comfortable.

Please engage in outdoor activities safely.
