Mandible Reconstruction: Are Standard Plates Limiting Surgical Precision?

Mandible reconstruction with fibula free flap remains a gold standard for patients with jaw cancers. However, One persistent challenge does not lie in the bone transfer itself, but in fixation.

Conventional stock plates require extensive intraoperative bending to adapt to patient anatomy. This manual process can introduce inaccuracies in plate fit, suboptimal screw positioning, prolonged operative time, and potential long-term complications such as misalignment or mechanical stress.

AI-led surgical planning is changing this paradigm. With patient-specific virtual planning, the mandible defect, fibula segments, and fixation strategy are defined preoperatively. This digital plan is translated into a 3D-printed, patient-matched titanium plate designed to follow the exact mandibular contour.

The clinical impact is clear:
- Improved anatomical accuracy and load distribution.
- Reduced intraoperative adjustment and surgical time.
- More predictable reconstruction outcomes.

Personalized fixation is no longer a luxury; it is becoming a new standard in complex mandible reconstruction.
