The Proactive Health Informatics group’s research aims to to build usable, secure, and intelligent pervasive systems that empower people to manage their health and see how their everyday decisions impact their progress to achieve future health goals. Our REU site will provide students with a unique opportunity to learn techniques in the areas of human computer interaction, pervasive computing (mobile or wearable), machine learning, privacy, and the social and legal implications of these technologies. Students will learn appropriate methods, software tools, and analysis techniques related to their project, thus experience is not necessarily required. In addition, all students will learn scholarly professional development skills such as synthesizing related work, identifying research aims, designing ethical studies, collecting data, analyzing results, and presenting results in papers and presentations.

The Indiana University 2022 Proactive Health Informatics REU Program application is now open.

Please encourage undergraduate students to apply.

What is the ProHealth REU?
The Proactive Health Informatics group builds usable, secure, and intelligent pervasive systems that empower people to manage their health and see how their everyday decisions impact their progress to achieve future health goals. Our REU site will provide students with a unique opportunity to learn techniques in the areas of human computer interaction, pervasive computing (mobile or wearable), machine learning, image recognition, and the social implications of these technologies.

When is it?
This year, the IU ProHealth REU will be from Sunday, May 22 through Saturday, July 16, 2022. The current plan is that the REU site will be in-person.

What other benefits do participants get?
For the 8-weeks of participation, each student will receive a $4800 stipend, free room and board, and a travel allowance to get to and from Bloomington (up to $550 within the U.S.).

How to Apply?
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The final deadline is February 28, 2022. Apply via the NSF Education and Training Application - https://bit.ly/ProHealthREU2022.

We all want to thank you IU ProHealth for such a wonderful REU experience. It was challenging and we all learned so much. We the REUs, want to thank our mentors and the people who took the time to visit us during the research program. The lessons we learned in the REU are lessons to keep for our entire professional life. 10/10 would do it again!

Hello everyone! We wrapped up the 5th week of the REU. This week we continued to work on iterations for our paper, peer reviews, and working on taking the next important steps in our projects. Valentina and Nudrat's project got IRB approval last week, and this week, they got their first potential participants! Congratulations!

Greatzel and Oscar presented their project in Friday's lab, elaborated on important aspects of their research, showed us innovative 3D designs for their wearables, and answered Q&A professionally. Great job, guys!

We also want to send a thank you to Pallabi, Dr. Chung, and Phoebe for leading the stand-ups, workshops, and ProHealth Tea respectively this week. We had wonderful learning experiences!

Welcome to week #4 of this amazing ProHealth REU experience. Here’s how we look at our stand-up meetings(tired but smiley 😃). This week, REUs have been working on data analysis, prototyping, building up research skills, advancing on the writing progress(introduction draft and results outline), learning about online presence...oh! and peer review.

We also watched a movie on our social event this week 🎬
We can't wait to share more moments of this busy week with you. Make sure to visit our blogs and get more detailed information on each project’s progress> https://blogs.iu.edu/prohealthreu21

Hello everyone! Our 3rd week has ended and it was once again filled with a lot of learning. This time we worked on our drafts for our Related Work and Methods section of our research paper. We had a workshop on writing our introduction which would be due at the end of the 4th week. This week we also met Dr. Warren, I wish we had more time to get to know each other! Maybe soon!

Here's a video that shows a little sneak peak of our meetings and our Friday Tea time, where we played Among Us. It was very fun! Dr. Katie is a good imposter player!

The second week at ProHealth REU and everyone is having a blast learning how to do research! 💡 This week we are making outlines for our paper and reading a lot of related literature. We are excited to keep going and to have more experiences! Here’s a sneak peek of what our stand-up meeting was like on Thursday and the first social event Friday. Shout-out to Nudrat for such a productive week despite connectivity issues. For our next social event, I heard some rumors that we would be playing among us! Watch out for it! 👀
