Since my teenage years I’ve experience the effects of trauma in the form of depression and paralyzing anxiety. I had some success addressing this with traditional psychotherapy. I also danced, did tai chi, trained in Pilates and yoga and other movement modalities. It wasn’t until I trained as a teacher of the Alexander Technique that I clearly saw how my depression and anxiety were a part of my ph
ysical being. I was locked, tight, tense, pulled down and disorganized. My body was literally depressed! As I positively changed the physical way I moved through life my psychological experiences of depression and anxiety also positively changed. I feel very fortunate now to teach this missing link to others. Through trauma and its effects (depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.) you lose a positive connection to your body and an understanding of how it works and how to move with freedom. When your body is stuck carrying around the past in the form of tension and guarding you experience it as physical pain. You may also experience this tension as a lack of energy or as frenetic energy. You can unlock your body and reconnect with your true self as you are now, not who you used to be or who you think you’re “supposed” to be. Your freedom is in you.
