is thrilled to share that Javier Rojo, Ph.D., Dean’s Eminent Scholar and Director of Research for Undergraduates Summer Institute of Statistics (RUSIS) at Indiana University was awarded funding for one year by the nsa.gov in the amount of $124,999.00 for the program to be held on campus this upcoming summer.

RUSIS recently celebrated 20 years of impact, and 2024 will mark its third consecutive summer to be held at IU. The program was first developed and launched by Dr. Rojo at Rice University in 2003 and its goal remains the same – to allow undergraduate students the opportunity to jumpstart their career interests in at .

“As statisticians, we study chance,” comments IUSPHB Dean David Allison. “Dr. Rojo gives people chance – people who, without his support, might not get that chance. The chance to appreciate the beauty of number and the beauty of wonder. The chance at a career that can be financially rewarding, intellectually rewarding, and for the social good all at once.”

recently awarded the 2023 Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award to Dr. Joe and Sarah Ellen Mamlin, who have been leaders in the AMPATH Kenya care programs, in partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine, for more than three decades.

The award is named in memory of , who was an Indiana teen diagnosed with HIV in 1984 after receiving tainted blood products. His mother Jeanne White Ginder presented the award to Dr. Joe Mamlin, who afterwards had a wonderful "fireside chat" with celebrated Provost Professor William Yarber, who is the senior director of the Rural Center for /STD Prevention (RCAP).

The event was also graced by Sylvia McNair, world-renowned vocalist and IU alumnus who sang the beautiful Kenyan song “Daima” to celebrate the occasion.
