Congratulations to Tammy Fitter, RN, for being recognized by the Indiana Department of Health with their Excellence in TB Prevention and Care Award!

Tammy is the IU Health Community Health and Monroe County Public Health Department Tuberculosis Nurse Case Manager, and is integral to tuberculosis prevention and care in the community.

“My goal is to build strong, trusting relationships with patients to ensure they receive comprehensive care and successfully complete treatment, which takes from three to nine months, potentially a year," she says.

Fitter works closely with Indiana University, HealthNet and primary care offices in the county to identify and treat latent TB infections, which can’t spread to another person, before they progress into active TB disease, which can spread.

Latent TB doesn’t have symptoms and can only be diagnosed through testing. Testing should be done if you come into contact with someone who has active TB disease or if you have symptoms of TB disease, which include but aren’t limited to:
• A bad cough lasting three weeks or longer
• Chest pain
• Coughing up blood or sputum (phlegm) from the lungs

Learn how to request a TB skin test on the Monroe County Public Health Clinic website: https://www.co.monroe.in.us/department/division.php?structureid=108.

As cleanup efforts continue after Friday's tornados, it's important to protect yourself and your loved ones from infections like tetanus, which can enter the body through cuts or puncture wounds - a real risk when handling storm debris!

Make sure you're up to date on your Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccination - adults should receive a booster every 10 years, or after 5 years in the case of a severe or dirty wound.

💉Tdap vaccination is available at the Monroe County Public Health Clinic at 333 E. Miller Dr. in Bloomington. Call 812-353-3244 to make an appointment.
