If you have been trying to reach us, we unfortunately have no phones or internet currently due to an area wide outage that began at approximately 11:45 am.

The call phone for the on-call midwife is currently working, but we ask that this only be used for emergencies or if you are in labor.

We will update here when service is restored and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Looking back:
“It’s incredible how someone who once felt like a stranger can become the person standing beside you during the most vulnerable, powerful, and life-changing moments of your life. As I approached my second birth, I leaned into a simple but powerful truth: I have done this before, and my body knows how to do it again. There were moments when labor felt near and my nerves took over—the fear of pain, the anxiety of the unknown, the question of how this labor would unfold. Those feelings are real and valid. But I learned to let them exist briefly, then gently shift my focus. I reminded myself of my strength, my courage, and the resilience that carried me through my first birth—and trusted it would rise again for my second.”

The Birth Center Experience:
“Going into my second birth, I felt more prepared. Labor was no longer unfamiliar territory. I had done the mental work, practiced pain-relief techniques that helped during my first labor, and gained new tools along the way. I carried the confidence of knowing, I can do this. Still, labor brought its own challenges. Our daughter struggled to progress, testing my patience and endurance. When labor finally intensified, it came on stronger than I ever imagined. Through every slow moment—and especially when I reached transition and truly believed I had nothing left—my midwife and support team never wavered. Their calm presence and unwavering belief in me carried me forward.”

Why they explored other options:
“Halfway through my pregnancy, a close friend encouraged us to tour the birth center after sharing her positive experience. Though we were skeptical at first, we decided to keep an open mind and schedule a tour. What we discovered was something neither of us expected: an immediate sense of warmth, peace, and comfort. For me, it was essential that my husband felt supported, because I knew his comfort would directly impact my own—during pregnancy, labor, and beyond. At the end of the tour, Dalton was asked for his thoughts. He was genuinely surprised. At our previous OB appointments, no one had ever acknowledged him or asked for his perspective—and neither of us realized how much that mattered until that moment. It became clear that if my “rock” felt seen and supported, then this was exactly where we belonged.”

The beginning of their first pregnancy:
“With our first pregnancy, we initially chose prenatal care with plans to deliver in a hospital. As a nurse who worked in a hospital setting, it felt familiar and safe. I assumed that what I was comfortable with professionally would naturally translate into comfort as a patient.”

This week we are excited to share the story of the family who had the 1500th baby at the Birth Center of Bloomington-Normal.

Cassidy and Dalton Miller have been happily married for nearly five years and are proud parents to a son and a daughter—both of whom were born at the birth center. After their experiences at the birth center, they felt a strong pull to share their story with others. To share why they decided to transfer care to the birth center part way through their first pregnancy, what they experienced here, and how they feel looking back on the birth of their babies.

Oxytocin is often called the “love hormone,” but in birth it’s also the power hormone.

It’s what drives contractions, helps your cervix open, supports placental release, and later helps with bonding and milk let-down.

What many people don’t realize is that oxytocin flows best when you feel safe. Privacy, calm lighting, familiar faces, and continuous support all help your body do what it was designed to do. Stress and adrenaline, on the other hand, can slow labor down.

Research shows that continuous, supportive care in labor is associated with shorter labors, lower cesarean rates, and higher satisfaction.

That’s why environment matters.
Birth works best when you feel safe — because when you feel safe, oxytocin flows. 🤍

The midwives listen to your baby’s heartbeat at planned intervals during labor (called intermittent auscultation) instead of monitors strapped to your belly for continuous electronic monitoring — not because we’re doing “less,” but because research shows that for people with low-risk pregnancies, this approach supports safe outcomes and freedom of movement, without increasing risks to baby or the birthing person. Continuous monitoring doesn’t reduce serious complications, but it does increase interventions like cesarean sections — so we use evidence-based care that protects your body’s physiology while keeping you and your baby safe (Wattar et al., 2021)

Less intervention doesn’t mean less care. It means thoughtful care. It means we don’t interrupt normal physiology unless there’s a reason to. It means your body gets space to do what it was designed to do — with skilled midwives quietly monitoring and supporting along the way.
