Naming specific painful emotions and understanding their cause allows us to fully experience them, facilitating their release and promoting healing in grief.

Here are a few emotions to take a closer look at:
Shock - disbelief, surreal, numb, foggy
Loneliness - empty, orphaned, abandoned, forgotten
Lost - bewildered, don’t belong anywhere, uncertain, unbalanced, disillusioned, distracted
Overwhelmed - need to run, this is too much, unable to cope
Angry - livid, irritable, frustrated
Sad - depressed, gloomy, sharply painful, sense of deep loss

Journaling doesn't JUST mean writing down your thoughts and feelings. Try these other methods of journaling to explore and express your grief.

Different Ways to "Journal"

-Bullet Journaling - journal style used to track productivity and manage tasks
-Zen Tangling - meditative journal practice that includes drawing structured patterns
-Stream of Consciousness - journal style used to allow the minds thoughts to flow freely
-Junk Journaling - journal style that incorporates recycles or found materials
-Nature Journaling - journal style that includes observation of nature
-Prompt Writing - journal style that uses questions or ideas to respond to
-Gratitude Journaling - journal style that tracks things you are grateful for

Sometimes it's hard to know where to start when you are supporting someone grieving. Here are a few ideas of helpful questions:

"What has this experience been like for you?"
“What’s something you loved most about them?”
“Do you have a favorite memory of them you’d like to share?”
“What has helped you get through the days so far?”
“Is there anything that’s made things a little easier or harder?”
“What kind of support feels helpful right now?”
“Is there something practical I can take off your plate?”

Try to Avoid:
Don’t ask “How are you?” in a routine way; it’s too broad and often unhelpful.
Avoid trying to “silver-line” their pain (“At least they lived a long life”).
Don’t force conversation if they’re not ready—respect silences or pauses.

Remember, grief is not one size fits all. These are only a few options and may not be good questions for everyone.

Asking for help when you are grieving is normal.

Needing help is normal:
-It’s okay to seek help in grief
-Talking to people about your grief is okay and can be helpful
-Many people are grieving and ask for help, it’s normal
-It’s okay to take your time in asking for help or asking right away
-It’s okay if you prefer a group over individual counseling, or vice versa.
-Asking for help is never a sign of weakness

Sometimes we need to get back to the basics. When we are grieving, it's okay to just focus on the simple every day needs.

These are just a few examples of the basic things you can include on your Grief Checklist:
-Did I eat today?
-Did I sleep/nap?
-Did I talk to someone?
-Did I shower?

What was most helpful in your support group?
-Learning how to plan my time to grieve as it was affecting my job.
-It was helpful to have a place to deal with my grief with others that understand.
-Realizing my feelings are real and okay.
-Realizing, and fully feeling, that I am not alone now.
-Simply attending the group.
-Hearing my feelings reflected in others lives.
