I often hear patients say a good workout relieves excess stress. That’s because exercise reduces cortisol – the stress hormone.

Too much cortisol and you become insulin resistant and store belly fat. Too much cortisol also makes you crave sugar and carbs and seek comfort food.

Let’s consider some of the other reasons why exercise is important:

BETTER INSULIN SENSITIVITY: Exercise makes your cells and muscles more sensitive to insulin so you don’t need as much. Less insulin means less belly fat.

LESS STRESS: I often hear patients say a good workout relieves excess stress. That’s because exercise reduces cortisol – the stress hormone. Too much cortisol and you become insulin resistant and store belly fat. Too much cortisol also makes you crave sugar and carbs and seek comfort food.

BETTER BRAIN HEALTH: Your brain on exercise performs so much better. Exercise improves memory, learning, and concentration. Vigorous exercise is a better antidepressant than Prozac. Exercise creates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDMF), which is basically miracle grow for your brain. When you exercise, your brain becomes more elastic. Exercise also helps to improve your mood, boost your energy, and reduce overall stress in your body and mind.

REDUCED RISK FOR CHRONIC DISEASE: Exercise does this through several mechanisms. It protects your heart and reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. It reduces inflammation (the cause of almost every disease of aging). And it balances hormones, therefore reducing breast and other common cancers.

ENHANCED DETOXIFICATION: Besides stimulating the colon, intense exercise allows your body to release toxins through your skin. It boosts detoxification of environmental chemicals. Vigorous exercise will help you work up a sweat, but gentle exercise keeps your circulation going and flushes out all the toxic fluids that build up in your lymphatic system. If your daily exercise routine doesn’t cause you to sweat profusely, take a steam or infrared sauna, if possible.

IMPROVED SEXUAL FUNCTION: Increased circulation and more energy are two of many reasons that consistent exercise can spark up your s*x life.

In fact, poor diet is responsible for almost 700,000 deaths in the US each year, and 11 million worldwide! And the average American consumes 55 pounds of added sugar each year, which we know is a major contributor to the diabesity epidemic. ⁣

The good news is that each step towards real, wholesome, delicious foods reduces your risk for chronic disease and increases your ability to feel great.⁣

A few simple ways to eat healthy are:⁣

Make sure your plate is 75% vegetables.⁣
Eat an array of colorful veggies.⁣
Include healthy fats in every meal.⁣
Make sure to optimize protein.⁣
Eat a low glycemic diet.⁣
Avoid conventional dairy.⁣
Reduce or cut out processed foods. ⁣

The evidence against the use of glyphosate keeps mounting, yet it’s still legally drenching our food supply. I try to be as good as I can about eating organic, high-quality food, and my glyphosate test revealed I was still in the 50th percentile. Studies have linked glyphosate to cancer, endocrine disruption, infertility, immune dysfunction, liver and kidney damage, and disruption of the microbiome. And not only is glyphosate harming human health and the health of our future generations, it’s also destroying our ecosystems.⁣

I dove into all-things glyphosate with Stephanie Seneff on a recent episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. You can find the episode titled, "The Harmful Effects of Weedkiller (Glyphosate) On Our Health And Our Future," on your favorite podcast app.

This is the result of the mountains of sugar and flour we consume, which leads to high glucose and insulin, which creates a domino effect. It drives excess calories into fat cells that then produce messengers to increase hunger, slow metabolism, prevent fat burning, and cause inflammation to spike. ⁣

In women, too much insulin turns estrogen into testosterone. This can lead to something misleadingly called polycystic ovarian syndrome. It is not an ovarian problem. It is a dietary problem.⁣

The extra testosterone in women causes hair loss, facial hair, acne, and infertility. In men, the testosterone gets converted to estrogen, which is why men with big bellies often have man b***s and lose the hair on their bodies. ⁣

The same high-sugar and -starch diet also spikes the hormones cortisol and adrenaline. When you eat a sugar- and starch-laden diet, your body literally perceives it as a stressor, just like when a tiger chases you. Adrenaline and cortisol increase, worsening insulin resistance and increasing cravings for sugar and starch.⁣

In my practice I bring balance to hormones by addressing insulin resistance, first using the Pegan Diet—a whole foods, good-fat, plant-rich, fiber-rich, low-glycemic diet.⁣

For women who are dealing with estrogen dominance (leading to PMS and cancers), I work on maintaining a healthy gut microbiome by increasing fibers (such as flaxseeds), which can detoxify and remove excess estrogen.⁣

For men who have low testosterone, we reduce sugar and increase healthy fats. I raised my testosterone significantly when I reduced starches and ate more healthy fats from nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, and grass-fed meats.⁣

You can learn more in my latest book, The Pegan Diet at PeganDiet.com.⁣

One of the biggest food lies of all time is that all calories are created equal. ⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Food is more than just calories, it’s information that our cells need to function, information that our metabolism can use to either run efficiently or sluggishly trudge along.⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
When you eat a piece of sugar, fruit juice or refined carbohydrates, it goes right to your liver, where it starts manufacturing fat, triggering more insulin resistance and causing chronically elevated blood insulin levels, driving your body to store everything you eat as even more belly fat. ⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Broccoli on the other hand is rich in fiber and low in carbohydrates and sugar. You’d have to eat a huge amount of Broccoli to reach the same amount of calories that just one small bag of candy could provide, and thanks to fiber you’d be full long before that could ever happen. ⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Eating well should not be all about watching QUANTITY, you need to be paying attention to QUALITY. ⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
Real foods like colorful vegetables, low-glycemic fruits, healthy fats (like nuts, seeds, avocados, olives, etc.), gluten-free whole grains, legumes, and responsibly sourced animals proteins and seafood—the foods I recommend in my Pegan diet—are going to give your cells the information they need to function at their very best.⠀⁣⁣
⠀⁣⁣
So choose kale over candy and focus on quality more than quantity; it will change your relationship to food and your health will thank you.⠀
