We can confirm it was a Pretty First Day of Spring in The City of Blue Island Illinois! ☀️

Blue Cap wasted no time stepping into the new season, right along the beautiful Cal-Sal Trail…

It was nice to slow down in gratitude, and watch a few boats pass by and finally feel the warm breeze off the Chatham Street Bridge.

Just down the block, others gathered in friendship and celebrated Spring’s return in The Ron Blouin Memorial Garden—while some just wanted to have a few laughs over Jenga.

We’re so thankful to be a part of this community, one who walks with us through every season.

You are appreciated.

Here’s a bit of sunshine for your timeline, neighbors. 🏘️🌇🌉🩵

Today we extend our heartfelt thanks to The Village of Calumet Park for recognizing March 12, 2026 as Intellectual and Developmental Disability Awareness Day!

We are grateful to Mayor Ronald Denson, whose proclamation encourages all citizens to work together to promote awareness, understanding, and inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Our appreciation also goes to the dedicated leaders who welcomed our participants and helped make the day so special: Village Administrator Teri Raney, Village Clerk Omara Fonseca, Police Chief Ernest Mobley, Fire Chief John Votteler, and Director of Parks & Recreation Jonathan Shaw.

We truly appreciate the many kind hearts and helpers throughout the Village of Calumet Park who helped plan and make this wonderful day possible for the people we support.

Together, we continue building communities where everyone is seen, valued, and included. 💙

Yesterday March 10, 2026 was a proud and memorable day for the Blue Cap community as we spent time with leaders and first responders across Blue Island.

We began the day together with a visit to City Hall, followed by tours of the Blue Island Police Department and Fire Department. Later, we stopped by the East Annex, where City Clerk Raeann Cantelo-Zylman and her team welcomed us for lunch from Beggar’s Pizza.

That evening, we returned for the Blue Island City Council Meeting, where Mayor Fred Bilotto, City Treasurer Nancy Rita, City Clerk Raeann Cantelo-Zylman, and members of the Blue Island City Council presented a proclamation recognizing March 10, 2026 as Intellectual and Developmental Disability Awareness Day in Blue Island!

Blue Cap participants Darran and Virgil proudly accepted the proclamation on behalf of the many individuals we support.

We’re grateful to the City of Blue Island for welcoming our community, opening their doors, and recognizing the importance of inclusion, dignity, and opportunity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Please join us in congratulating Darran and Virgil for representing Blue Cap so proudly. 💙

🗣️ Our Self Advocacy Committee is making their voices heard! This month’s meeting was packed with purpose, members signed letters to local representatives and members of Congress, calling on them to champion the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities. The group also celebrated their newly elected board members and looked ahead to exciting advocacy trips coming up this year to Springfield and Washington, D.C. Together, they’re proving that speaking up creates real change. 💙

More than food. More than a pantry. 💙
Every week, Yvette and our incredible volunteers show up — not just to stock shelves, but to pour into people. Together, they help serve 1,000 neighbors every single month— making sure no one they greet goes without.

Our Blue Cap volunteers are learning, growing, and building real-world skills that go far beyond these walls: communication, teamwork, responsibility, and the simple power of showing up for someone else. This is what community looks like. 🫶

If you’re interested in volunteering or donating to Blue Cap’s food pantry, you can contact Yvette at yvette.shead@blue-cap.org.

📢 National Call-In Day to Protect IDEA — Today, March 5

Today, March 5, Blue Cap joins disability advocates across the country who are raising their voices to protect the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) — the federal law that helps ensure students with disabilities have access to a free and appropriate public education.

For nearly 50 years, IDEA has been administered through the U.S. Department of Education. Federal officials have indicated they may move oversight of these programs to another agency, which could disrupt services, create confusion, and weaken accountability for students with disabilities and their families.

☎️ HOW YOU CAN HELP TODAY:

Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard: (202) 224-3121

When the operator answers:
1️⃣ Ask to be connected to your U.S. Senator or Representative.

2️⃣ Say you support keeping IDEA programs within the U.S. Department of Education.

3️⃣ Ask them to oppose moving IDEA oversight to another federal agency.

📧 If you’re unable to call, you can quickly send an email to Congress here:
https://act.thearc.org/campaign/156819/

Your voice truly matters. A quick call or email today can help protect the rights of students with disabilities.

Knights of Columbus Council 10151 (The KC Crusaders) out of Orland Park stopped by Blue Cap recently with an $800 check raised through hand to hand donations to their annual Tootsie Roll Drive!

We are sincerely grateful to George Griffin, Len Wales, and Kevin O’Boye for taking the time to personally deliver this generous gift.

We are honored to be among the several charities they chose to uplift.

Blue Cap continues because of the kindness and compassion of our friends and neighbors who speak our name in rooms we are not in.

Thank you for standing with the people we serve!
