Theresa Ruth Dotson Alexander

Theresa Ruth Dotson Alexander, 53, passed away on Wednesday, September 25th at her home surrounded by family and friends after an extended battle with melanoma. There will be a celebration of life for Theresa on Saturday, October 5th from 4 to 7 PM pm at Eric and Jen Butler’s residence, located at 15009 MO-FF, Mayview, MO. We want to celebrate her short but impactful life and the love and light Theresa brought to so many lives. Following the celebration of life a dinner will be provided and music from her favorite band.
Theresa was born on January 1, 1971 in North Kansas City to David Dotson and Julie Cannon. Theresa graduated from UCM with a degree in Psychology. She worked for several clinics and began her own practice in 2009, The Center for Counseling and Training which she maintained until 2019. She continued seeing clients until August of 2024.
Theresa is survived by her husband Brian of the home, and children, Jonah Dotson (Teagan Berger), Gretchen Snyder (Troy), Lauren Alexander (Autumn); and grandchildren: Henley, Cash, Elton, Brody, Rainey and Beckham.
Theresa was preceded in death by her parents, and her niece, Mallory.

Hi there. Just a reminder we are over here in Blue Springs, MO supplying some fabulous counseling therapy services.

I’m on the left. I see people ages 15 and up two days a week. I am private pay.

Amanda Twombly, LPC is the tall gal in the middle. She works several days a week and sees kids and adults. The best way to contact her is counseling@amandatwombly.net. She does her own scheduling.

Jessi Johnson, LPC is on the right. She sees adult people several days a week. She takes insurance and private pay. I do Jessi’s scheduling as well as my own.

You can always call our office at 816-653-2297.

I always say “we all need some counseling in our lives”.

We ❤️ what we do!

“What Happened to You?” gave such relatable and understandable perspective on the various ways trauma presents itself. If you work with kids, are a provider, or just want to be able to better empathize and support people in your world, I highly recommend this read.

Someone who recently experienced a loss apologized to me for not being more supportive and involved when I lost my mom. My response was “you don’t know til you know.” Like so many other things in life, we can’t really ever understand what someone is going through until we experience it ourselves. For me, the hardest part of a significant loss is that once the services are over, everyone else goes back to living life like nothing ever happened while you are left to go on living with a huge but invisible hole inside. It’s important to give yourself and others grace. There is no right way to grieve. There are no right words for anyone to offer. Ask for the support you need when you need it. ❤️

Such a great training!

Such a great training!

We still have openings for Trauma Sensitive Solutions Yoga Training for Therapists/Other Helping Providers
It’s a Friday morning (the best time for a training! 😊)
We will get to tour the Embark Residential campus—it is beautiful. I would not link my name to something I wasn’t comfortable with. These are some people who believe in helping teens.
Our training will be until 12:30pm.
Embark has graciously subsidized the training so the cost to you is only $100.
-No yoga experience needed
-You don’t even have to do the yoga if you aren’t comfortable
-All supplies are provided; you are welcome to bring your own mat if you want
-Meredith (yoga instructor) and I are all-inclusive, want everyone to be comfortable and have fun while getting some CEUs.

We look forward to seeing you. Please feel free to pass this on to your colleagues,
Theresa Dotson Alexander, LPC

What was supposed to be a fun day of celebration for our city turned into a tragedy. I took my son to this event. Fortunately we were safe and did not witness any devastation. But so many people weren’t as fortunate. By now most have seen it on the news or heard about it from a friend. These events are difficult for everyone but present a special challenge for parents: how to talk to your kids about traumatic events. My friend and fellow therapist had these tips:

“Depending on the child’s age, they could be in a concrete stage of thinking. They may think that each time there is a “parade” or “rally” there will be a shooting, or people will get hurt. This is normal development. Help your child understand these things don’t happen with every parade or rally.

Ask open ended questions about their interpretation of what happened. If you feel they need a better understanding of what happened; explain in age appropriate language what happened.

Kids are more likely to ask questions and seek support from parents when they feel connected and supported by them. Express to your child that you are always willing to hear their concerns and then SHOW them you are available to hear them by giving them your time and undivided attention. “

So often the best advice in a parenting dilemma is simply connection.
