In honor of Women's History Month, join us in celebrating Eva!
Eva Maria Elisabeth Shoemaker was born on February 23, 1944, in Breslau, Germany—now part of Poland. She spent her childhood and teenage years in Germany, remaining there until the age of eighteen.
Eva’s love story began with a blind date arranged by a mutual friend. She spoke only German, and James spoke only English, so their early conversations were translated by a friend who accompanied them on dates. Despite the language barrier, their connection was immediate. Just three months after meeting, Eva married James Shoemaker on May 15, 1962, in a civil ceremony officiated by a judge due to her German citizenship and legal requirements.
At the time, James was serving in the United States Army, and shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to the United States. They welcomed two children, Teresa and Tom, and later remarried in the U.S. so they could have the church wedding they had always wanted. As James’s Army career required frequent moves, Eva devoted herself to raising their children and managing the household as a stay-at-home mother.
Following James’s military retirement, the couple relocated to Odessa, Texas, where he worked in the oil industry for four years. During this time, Eva worked in the shoe department at Dillard’s. The family later settled in Blue Springs, Missouri, where James held various jobs, including driving a school bus. Eva joined him as a bus aide, allowing them to work side by side.
Both Eva and James retired in 1999 and embraced their love of travel. Over the years, they explored the United States in several RVs, visiting destinations such as the Grand Canyon, Roaring River in Missouri, Lake Jacomo Campgrounds, and numerous states for camping adventures. Their RV travels concluded in 2010 when James began experiencing medical issues.
The couple remained in their Blue Springs home, staying active in their church and deeply involved with their family. In 2022, Eva lost the love of her life after 60 years of marriage. Today, she is the proud grandmother of one grandchild and one great-grandchild, carrying forward a legacy built on love, partnership, and shared adventure.
