🔧 2-Minute Safety Tip

Take a moment today to check the handrails on your stairs.

Give them a firm pull.

If the railing moves, feels loose, or isn’t securely attached to the wall, it may not provide the support someone needs during a slip or loss of balance.

A solid handrail can make a big difference in preventing a serious fall.

Sometimes the simplest safety checks around the home take just a minute, but can help keep everyone safer.

If you need help securing a railing or improving safety around your home, we’re always happy to help.💙

🚨 The most dangerous room in the house for seniors might surprise you…

It’s the bathroom.

Slippery floors, stepping over a tub wall, and lack of grab bars make it the #1 place falls happen.

The good news? Most bathroom accidents are preventable with a few simple upgrades.

✔ Grab bars
✔ Non-slip flooring
✔ Handheld shower heads
✔ Better lighting

Small changes can make a huge difference in staying safe at home.

⏰ Don’t forget... clocks “spring forward” tonight!

When you change your clocks, it’s also a great time to do a quick home safety check.

✔ Test your smoke detectors
✔ Check carbon monoxide detectors
✔ Replace batteries if needed
✔ Make sure detectors are less than 10 years old

These simple checks take just a few minutes and can make a big difference in keeping your home and family safe.

This tiny upgrade might not look life-changing.

But it prevented a fall.

A properly placed grab bar.
A hand-held shower head.

These aren’t just upgrades.
They’re confidence builders.

Most falls don’t happen because someone is “careless.”
They happen because homes weren’t designed for aging bodies.

We fix that. 💙

Two backgrounds.
One mission.

At Secure Spaces, we bring something a little different into our work.

👩‍⚕️ Stacy – Nurse with 20+ years of experience and a Certified Senior Home Safety Specialist
🛠 Nick – Home Modification Specialist & Skilled Tradesman with decades of hands-on experience

Together, we look at homes through two very important lenses:

• How the home functions for aging bodies
• How the home can be modified to make everyday life safer and easier

Most homes weren’t designed for aging in place.
But with the right changes, they can be.

That might mean:
✔ Installing grab bars
✔ Improving lighting
✔ Safer bathrooms and showers
✔ Better railings and entry access
✔ Replacing hard-to-use fixtures
✔ Updating spaces to make daily living easier

But it’s not just about tools and materials.

It’s about helping our neighbors stay in the homes they love, both safely and confidently.

That’s why we started Secure Spaces. 💙

If you or someone you love is trying to age safely at home, we’re always happy to talk.

When should you install grab bars?

Honestly? Earlier than most people think.

We've seen too many falls happen during very normal, everyday moments like stepping out of the shower, standing up from the toilet, or reaching for balance on a slick floor.

Grab bars aren’t a sign that someone “can’t do things anymore.” They’re a smart, proactive way to stay independent and confident in your own home.

The best time to install them is before there’s a fall, an injury, or a scary close call.

If you’ve ever thought, “We might need those someday,” that someday is probably now.

💙 Planning ahead keeps people safely in the homes they love.

Tile, stone, fiberglass tub surround... Proper grab bar installation depends on the wall material and what's underneath it. This is why we take the time to assess each space before we install, because shortcuts and "good-enoughs" don't belong in safety installs.

Throwback Thursday 🕰️ | One of our very first big projects
This kitchen started out dark, dated, and ready for a refresh (yes, there was carpet 😅).
Without changing the layout or doing major demo, we completely transformed the space from brown-on-yellow to light, bright, and functional.

Before:
▪️ Dark brown cabinets
▪️ Yellow laminate countertops & matching backsplash
▪️ Old dome lighting & brown exhaust hood
▪️ Carpet in the kitchen (we still think about that one 😬)

After:
▪️ Cabinets painted white with new hardware & hinges
▪️ Butcher block countertops & tiled backsplash
▪️ Farmhouse-style sink
▪️ Microwave installed above the stove
▪️ LED ceiling fan with adjustable lighting
▪️ New LVP flooring throughout

This project reminds us that you don’t always need a full gut or layout change to completely refresh a space. Thoughtful updates can make a home feel brand new again. 💙

When we walk through homes, there are a few safety risks we see again and again and often in houses that are otherwise well cared for.

1️⃣ Poor lighting in critical areas
Bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways are some of the most common places for falls. Dim lighting or shadows make it harder to see changes in flooring, steps, or water on the floor.

2️⃣ Clutter in walking paths
We get it, people love their stuff. But extra furniture, baskets, cords, and decor in walkways can turn a normal step into a trip hazard.

3️⃣ Steps and entryways with no handrails or support
Even one step can be risky without something sturdy to hold onto, especially in wet, icy, or uneven conditions.

The good news? Many of these issues can be improved quickly and affordably. Small changes can make a big difference in staying safe and independent at home.

💙 Safety doesn’t mean giving up comfort, it means protecting it.

If you’ve ever wondered about your own home, we’re always happy to help.

Most falls happen in the bathroom and that's why we love days like these.
Simple upgrades like grab bars and slip-resistant flooring can make a huge difference in safety and confidence.
Hearing back from this couple that they love the changes made to their space? That's the best part. 🙌

You know that door that sticks, rubs, won’t latch, or just acts up?
Yeah… those aren’t just annoying, they can be a safety issue.

We’ve been adjusting doors lately to improve:
✔️ Smooth operation
✔️ Proper latching
✔️ Easier access

Small fixes like this make everyday life easier, especially for aging adults using walkers, canes, or wheelchairs.

If your house is fighting you… let’s fix that 😉
