Water intake is essential for horses (and humans), it directly affects nearly every body system and physiological function.

Adequate water intake assists with digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and metabolic function.

🔸 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - water intake supports saliva production and prevents impaction colic, saliva supports softening of foods as it’s swallowed and digested.
🔸 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - adequate hydration supports blood volume which supports nutrient and oxygen transport throughout the body.
🔸 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - adequate water intake and hydration supports waste elimination urine and supports lover and kidney function.

- Dry or tacky gums and mouth
- Prolonged skin tenting (skin on the neck or shoulder stays elevated when pinched)
- Delayed capillary refill time (takes longer than 2 seconds for color to return to the gums after pressing)
- Sunken eyes
- Dark, concentrated urine or decreased urine output
- Reduced manure production or dry, firm manure
- Lethargy or dull attitude
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Elevated heart rate and respiratory rate
- Poor performance or muscle cramping (tying-up)

- Provide clean, fresh water
- Keep them eating

Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a serious neurologic disease in horses caused by protozoal infection of the central nervous system. Most cases are due to Sarcocystis neurona, but Neospora hughesi can also be responsible.

EPM is tricky to diagnose because its signs can mimic other health problems and range from mild to severe. Some of the common signs include incoordination, muscle atrophy (especially along the topline or hindquarters), abnormal gait, and weakness. It can also cause cranial nerve damage (facial paralysis, difficulty swallowing), behavioral changes, and even seizures.

If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian promptly. Early detection and treatment can improve the chances of recovery.

- Always provide clean, accessible water
- Offer electrolytes (especially after work or in hot conditions)
- Monitor hydration status during travel or after illness
- Soak hay or feed wet mashes to increase water intake
