Finding your happy place is key post concussion.

If your escape from reality increases symptoms - it will be harder to navigate recovery.

Establishing your happy place and catering your treatment plan to focus on that happy place can make recovery easier.

You look fine on the outside.

But concussion recovery often feels invisible on the inside.

The dizziness.
The overload.
The exhaustion.
The emotional weight.
The effort it takes just to get through the day.

One of the hardest parts of concussion recovery is feeling unseen while carrying symptoms people cannot fully understand.

At Midwest Concussion Clinic, our mission is simple:

Making the Invisible Visible.

If recovery feels harder than expected, you do not have to navigate it alone.

Just because concussion recovery is over - doesn’t mean our mental health is something we can ignore.

A concussion history increases the risk of clinical depression and anxiety and even suicidal and self-harm attempts or ideation.

Don’t neglect mental health during concussion recovery.

A positive mindset does NOT mean pretending you’re fine.

It means:
• accepting where you are
• reducing fear around symptoms
• focusing on what you CAN control
• recognizing progress even on hard days

Recovery is rarely perfect.
But one difficult day does not erase progress.

If recovery feels overwhelming, you do not have to navigate it alone.

Concussion recovery is not always just physical.

Sometimes the hardest part is the emotional weight nobody prepared you for.

The anxiety.
The overwhelm.
The frustration.
The isolation.
The uncertainty.
The feeling of not feeling like yourself.

In Episode 5 of A Midwest Minute With Matt, we discuss the emotional side of concussion recovery and why these experiences are often more connected to the brain and nervous system than people realize.

You are not weak.
You are not lazy.
And you are not alone.

Depression after a concussion is REAL.

Not weakness.
Not laziness.
Not “just stress.”

A concussion can temporarily disrupt:
• mood
• sleep
• stress response
• motivation
• emotional regulation

And recovery can feel overwhelming when you add:
• isolation
• uncertainty
• loss of routine
• nervous system overload

If you feel unlike yourself right now:
you are not alone.

You do not need to fix everything today.

Start with:
• one walk
• one routine
• one supportive conversation
• one small win

Small steps still count.

Concussions And Depression go hand in hand.

But depression may not be what you think.

Depression is lack of emotion.

I’m not happy.
I’m not sad.
I’m not angry.

I just feel - flat.

The longer we don’t feel good - the harder it is to remember what good feels like.

Mind over matter doesn’t work when the mind is what’s the matter.

After a concussion, many people feel:

* overwhelmed
* anxious
* emotionally exhausted
* disconnected
* mentally “stuck”

And the hardest part?

Most people around you can’t see it.

Concussion symptoms are often invisible — but that does NOT make them imaginary.

Your brain may be overloaded.
Your nervous system may be stressed.
Your energy systems may be struggling to keep up.

That’s not weakness.

That’s why pushing harder doesn’t always help.

Recovery often starts with:

* regulation
* consistency
* sleep
* pacing
* support
* calming overloaded systems

You are not broken.

You are navigating an invisible injury in a world that expects visible proof.

And you do not have to navigate it alone.

You’re not “just anxious.”

After a concussion, your brain is dealing with too much input at once — and it responds by going into protection mode.

That’s why you feel:
• Heart racing
• Mind spinning
• Everything feels like too much

Most people try to push through it.
Or ignore it.

👉 That’s what makes symptoms worse.

Instead:
• Reduce input
• Control your environment
• Slow your system

Start here:
🧠 Breathe in 4 seconds
🧠 Breathe out 6 seconds

Then use the Rule of 3’s:
• 3 things you can see
• 3 things you can feel
• 3 things you can hear

This helps your brain feel safe again.

And when your brain feels safe → symptoms settle.

You don’t have to guess your recovery.

We’ll guide you.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Concussions and mental health aren’t separate. They have to treated together.

Concussions will affect mental health.
Mental health will affect concussion recovery.

You can’t focus on one without treating the other.

If your concussion recovery is stalled or you feel lost - look into your mental health and how you’re treating it!
