NAMI Lowcountry Their first goal was to buy two apartments in Hilton Head for rent to the mentally ill at reduced cost.

NAMI Lowcountry offers understanding, resources, support groups and educational services to anyone who is struggling with their mental health or their loved ones In 1988 a handful of Beaufort County families, who were all trying to cope with the mental illness of a loved one, met through their association with the Coastal Empire Community Mental Health Center. They formed the Beaufort Alliance for the Mentally Ill and continued to meet informally to support each other and find ways to educate the community about serious mental illness. In 1991 NAMI Beaufort County was officially recognized as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Our Story

In 1988 a handful of Beaufort County families, who were all trying to cope with the mental illness of a loved one, met through their association with the Coastal Empire Community Mental Health Center. Their first goal was to buy two apartments in Hilton Head for rent to the mentally ill at reduced cost. They formed the Beaufort Alliance for the Mentally Ill and continued to meet informally to support each other and find ways to educate the community about serious mental illness. In 1991 NAMI Beaufort County was officially recognized as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. In 2015 the Board of Directors voted to change the affiliate name to NAMI Lowcountry to better reflect the expansion of our service area to include Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Colleton and Allendale counties.
