5 Tips to Support Balanced Blood Sugar!

There are some general recommendations that work for most people when it comes to supporting blood sugar balance. For example, my first tip for balancing blood sugar is balancing your meals with protein, fat, and carbs and eating animal protein foods first (or at least partially).

Why does this help support our blood sugar? Protein breaks down slower than carbohydrates. This is why balancing your meals helps support stable blood sugar levels. We can take it a step further by eating at least some of the protein food first. This will lead to a smaller blood sugar rise post meal, which helps avoid drops in blood sugar as well. Stable blood sugar = stable energy and less stress on the body.

I am often asked what the most optimal ratio is for protein and carbs, but this question is impossible to answer without knowing more about someone and their health history and how they are currently eating. Reflecting on your hunger, energy, digestion, and mood before and after meals is a helpful way of finding the right amount for you.

With Tip 3 is all about consistency and eating enough. If you are skipping meals or under eating, it will be hard to gauge what is and it not working for blood sugar balance.

Lastly, using foods like cinnamon, turmeric, ginger and even Peppermint can help with stabilizing blood sugar and energy. Plus it can make food taste great!

Fun Fact: I've worked in dermatology for over 20 years now!
I've been helping people with their skin but was realizing I was not actually helping them solve their issues once and for all.

It wasn't until I was dealing with my own health issues that I sought out a different, more comprehensive approach...one that was focused on root cause & long term solutions.

Traditional medicine taught me to label an issue and find the “pill for the ill,” but functional medicine is so much more. We identify the root causes of diseases (and there can be many) and the seemingly unrelated symptoms that stem from those roots. We spend time creating a connection with the patient. We lead them down the path toward healing. It was like nothing I’ve ever learned before.

The good news? By using a functional medicine approach, I am happier & healthier right now in my life than ever before.
My patients are also experiencing better, more quality results because of this whole body philosophy as well!

So here's my message: Trust yourself. Pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you. Every symptom you feel is your body's way of messaging you that something needs attention.
Reach out for help. I'm here for you!

What is such a powerful tool to get results, that so many people neglect?

Prioritizing a positive mindset & their mental health!

90% of our thoughts are from our subconscious. Thoughts drive your attitude, which affects behavior and actions, which then become habits and routine. So what are we thinking subconsciously? 😳🙆‍♀️

Unfortunately, the subconscious mind is geared for the negative, so many of us have self limiting beliefs and focus more on what we don't have or aren't good at versus what we are. These are Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTS).
Instead of letting this cycle continue, create a new positive one 😍

WRITE IT OUT and keep it visually handy!
1."Brain dump" your worries and fears. These are all valid.

But THEN...it's time to Dream & Manifest.
2. What does it look & feel like if you could reach X goal?
Visualize this. WHAT do YOU want?

3. Set Intentions for the Day, so you can feel in control & focused (don't let the day run you)

4. Create Positive Affirmations & Reminders.
Such as "I have the power to change my health".

5. Keep a Gratitude Journal. Write out WINS of the day and positives to remind you that yes, there ARE good things in life!

Those dreams you have? Manifest it. Believe it. Talk about it like it WILL happen.

All of these will help rewire and train your mind to think more positive and be proactive.

Today stop and listen to the thoughts in your head. Be mindful of the conversation you have with yourself. If you want to be healthy, or achieve any goal, it starts with a healthy and strong mind! 😊❤

Root Cause of PCOS #5: Hormonal Imbalances Beyond Androgens

How and why?

Many hormones are interconnected!

Here are some commone trends with PCOS:

PCOS often includes low progesterone, leading to irregular cycles, anxiety, and poor sleep.

Estrogen dominance (high estrogen relative to progesterone) can worsen symptoms like bloating, mood swings, and heavy periods.

Thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s) can mimic or worsen PCOS symptoms.

My Functional Medicine Approach:

Testing: Full hormone panel (DUTCH test, blood tests for estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid function) are all ideal.

Supporting progesterone which includes mananaging stress but also nutrients like magnesium, B6.

Liver detoxification: Cruciferous vegetables, DIM, and fiber to balance estrogen.

Thyroid support: Iodine, selenium, zinc, and checking for Hashimoto’s antibodies are all options I might use.

You’ve heard the phrase “beauty starts from within,” but did you know that’s quite literally true when it comes to your skin? In functional medicine we have been diving deep into how the gut microbiome affects the other systems of the body. One of the big connections is the gut-skin axis.

It turns out that the secret to healthy skin, but also overcoming chronic skin conditions are directly related to the health of your gut microbiome.

Your microbiome is a community of trillions of microbes—bacteria, fungi, viruses—that live in and on your body. Your gut microbiome, located in your digestive tract, plays a huge role in digestion, immunity, mood, and inflammation.

Meanwhile, did you know? Your skin has its own diverse microbiome, which helps protect against harmful pathogens, maintain the skin barrier, and regulate inflammation. The skin is technically the largest organ in the body!

These two systems—your gut and skin—are in constant communication. This is what we call the gut-skin axis.

Here’s how the connection works:
Leaky Gut = Leaky Skin

When the gut lining becomes inflamed or “leaky” (because of stress, medications, inflammatory foods etc) toxins and food particles can leak back out to the bloodstream - NOT what we want. This triggers systemic inflammation. Symptoms are varied, but one of these are skin issues.

Conditions like eczema, acne, psoriasis, and rosacea have all been linked to gut imbalances.

This “internal fire” often shows up as redness, puffiness, or flare-ups on the skin. Many people with skin/gut imbalance might often have other symptoms of inflammation, like digestive issues, joint pain, headaches or migraines or even fatigue.

Today I'm sharing with you my Favorite Superfood Gut Healing Smoothie Mix!

Like many other people, I've experienced many digestive issues and struggled with my gut health. What people DON'T know is that these issues are NOT normal & that your gut microbiome has a huge impact on our entire well-being!

Many can benefit from including more FIBER and lots of COLOR in their diet! All of these different foods provide a variety of nutrients, which supports a healthy gut, healthy hormones and more!

My "mash up smoothie" is really a concoction of different veggies & fruits. I aim to pick at least 1 new item each week. I blend them all up & keep them in the freezer until ready to use.

Then I blend it with almond milk, water, 1/4 cup pomegranate or tart cherry juice, 2 tbsp flaxseed or chia, 1 serving non dairy protein powder (like pea or collagen) plus some ginger or cinnamon!

Smoothies, when done right, can be a great way to include more foods that you might not eat in your normal diet plus support a healthy body!

What is one of your favorite smoothie ingredients??

The number one thing that you can do to balance your hormones…usually before even testing, is...??

1️⃣ Focus on optimizing blood sugar & insulin

Blood sugar imbalances are one of the most common causes of hormonal dysregulation.

Blood sugar imbalances can increase cortisol, testosterone, estrogen dominance, insulin resistance & more. Aka a hormone imbalance nightmare!

This is why I recommend focusing on blood sugar for women trying to:

🫐struggling with PCOS
🫐support a healthy pregnancy
🫐decrease PMS symptoms
🫐feel better postpartum
🫐decrease menopausal symptoms

3 Easy Ways to Start:
1. Eat consistently (every 3-4 hrs) to prevent blood sugar drops and spikes
2. Plan your plate with 1) protein, 2) healthy fats 3) non-starchy veggies & 4) low glycemic carbohydrates
3. Move your body all day long (with physical activity) and ideally after a meal (i.e. 10 min walk)

Top Root Cause #4 of PCOS: Adrenal dysfunction & cortisol imbalances

How and why?

Some women have PCOS driven by excess cortisol rather than insulin resistance.

Chronic stress leads to prolonged cortisol release, which can increase androgens and disrupt ovulation.

High cortisol can also contribute to blood sugar imbalances and weight gain, particularly around the abdomen.

Our Functional Medicine Approach:
Specialized Testing: Salivary or DUTCH cortisol testing is best here
Lifestyle: Stress-reducing practices (meditation, breathwork, yoga) are key. Reducing overall stress is most important!
We might use Supplements & Adaptogens: Ashwagandha, rhodiola, and holy basil all support adrenal function.
Sleep: Prioritize quality sleep to regulate cortisol and circadian rhythm

Is it genetics or lifestyle that is causing your issues?

While genes do play a role, about 90% of all health concerns are due to POOR LIFESTYLE!

Hormones can be triggered and made WORSE by what you are doing (or not doing).

Some Culprits:

EXTREME STRESS: Mental & emotional stress, whether positive or negative, wrecks havoc on our hormones.

UNDER/OVERWEIGHT: Our bodies need a healthy amount of body fat to produce hormones. Too little & the body doesn't feel safe to make/maintain levels. Toxins are stored in bodyfat, and those with higher amounts are more at risk for many health conditions.

POOR DIET: Huge one!! Poor food choices will raise inflammation, causes blood sugar imbalances, nutritional deficiencies; we need nutrients to make hormones!

MEDICATION: All meds have side effects. The birth control pill suppresses the body's natural production of hormones. Antibotics & other meds also disrupt the gut bacteria.

INFLAMMATION: Signs include headaches, joint or muscle pain, digestive stress, acne, trouble sleeping etc. Inflammation shows chronic STRESS at a cellular level.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVELS: Too much exercise halts our hormone production, while a sedentary lifestyle raises inflammation!

POOR GUT & LIVER HEALTH: Our gut & liver are responsible for detoxification. Without proper function, hormones can get build up in our system!

CHRONIC TOXIC EXPOSURE: Environmental toxins from plastics, air supply, water supply, cleaning, beauty & self care products all contain chemicals that are classified as "endocrine disruptors".

As you can see, there are MANY factors to Hormone Health. Remember all systems are connected, so we must prioritize whole body wellness. Let's shift the focus from treating to HEALING! 🙌

It's a new month and some women are out there thinking...
"Why even bother anymore??"
You're tired of putting in the work & not seeing the results you want. 🙄😩

This could be not losing weight, not making progress in your workouts, feeling fatigued and unmotivated.

Many times we want things done yesterday. We have to remember that these issues didn't start overnight, so we have to be patient when healing.

➡️So why ARE you spinning your wheels?!

Negative mindset
Unrealistic expectations
No specific goals
No structured plan
Lack of accountability
Lack of professional help

As shared in my previous posts, lifestyle affect your hormones. Hormones affect results. Want results and better hormones? Start with your lifestyle.

Blood sugar imbalances, stress levels, thyroid function, gut health and detoxification and much more ALL play a role in fat/weight loss, energy, mood regulation, hormone production& much more.

Optimize Hormones = Optimal Results

How you FEEL and FUNCTION will affect how you look. If you feel like you're spinning your wheels, make sure you're addressing your WHOLE health & lifestyle.

➡️Words of Advice:

1. Keep doing your healthy lifestyle choices, but don't stress about trying to do "everything".

2. Dig deep & be your own advocate.
Do research & make sure (ALL) your hormones and systems are functioning at optimal (not just average) levels. Everyone's health is unique!

3. Reach out for help and support, in the form of a Health Professional AND also a friend, family member etc.

4. Believe in yourself. Practicing positivity & a good mental attitude will affect your healing.
Never underestimate the power of the body 🙏

There are 5 main root causes to PCOS. We've covered the first 2 (insulin resistance and cortisol imbalance/oxidative stress)

The 3rd big factor? Your gut health!

How it works:

The gut microbiome influences hormone balance and inflammation. Did you know that 60% of your hormones are synthesized in the gut?!

Gut dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad bacteria) can contribute to increased androgens and insulin resistance.

Leaky gut (intestinal permeability) can trigger immune responses and systemic inflammation.

Many people have both of these issues, stemming from a poor diet, toxin exposure, medicatiom use, combined with stress and not addressing these long term.

Our Functional Medicine Approach:

Testing: We can use a comprehensive stool analysis and food sensitivity testing.

Diet: Probiotic and prebiotic-rich foods, elimination of gut irritants (gluten, dairy, sugar) but all done on an individualized basis.

Supplements: Some might include Probiotics, digestive enzymes, L-glutamine for gut healing and resorting the gut lining & bacteria.
