If you have ever caught yourself saying things like:

You are not alone. But here’s the catch: your mind is not great at processing “don’t.”

So when you focus on what you do not want, your mind often locks onto the picture of it and keeps serving it up, even though you are trying to get away from it.

Have you noticed how the thought “That should not have happened” never feels neutral?

In this clip, Dr. Jon Connelly explains why: the mind is built for survival, and one of the ways it tries to protect you is by pushing you toward action. So when you hold the belief that something should not have happened, deeper mind treats it like a problem to solve and starts generating emotion, tension, and mental noise to get you to do something about it.

The catch is obvious: you cannot undo what already happened. But the unconscious does not automatically recognize that. So it keeps pressing the gas pedal.

Resentment is sneaky because it feels like proof.

It feels like the not good feeling is coming from what they did, what happened, what should not have happened.

In this clip, Dr. Jon Connelly offers a different lens: the distress is being generated by your own mind, not because it wants you to suffer, but because it is trying to drive behavior. Emotion, sensation, thoughts, impulses, habits, all of it is the mind’s attempt to get something handled.

But when it came to you, your feelings, choices, reactions, you were often “explained” with labels: good girl, disappointing, lazy, naughty, nice, sweet, nasty.
