A new study has found that women eating more than 3 servings weekly of cabbage or sauerkraut had a stunning 63% reduced risk for breast cancer. But crucially, it had to be or short-cooked. Cancer risk was not reduced when this vegetable was long-cooked. That’s because cooking destroys the enzyme (myrosinase) that is needed to activate the key fighting compounds in cabbage which are indole-3-carbinol and isothiocyanates. The same is true for all broccoli family vegetables. Raw and sauerkraut are also a great sources of vitamins C, K, B6, B9, potassium and dietary fiber—all for just 25 calories per delicious serving.

Blood oranges not only have more antioxidants compared to normal oranges, but they carry a bonus. It’s the anthocyanin C3G (cyanidin-3-glucoside) which is a powerful antioxidant that gives this fruit—and certain —their brilliant color. When healthy adults drank 600 ml of blood orange juice daily for 21 days as part of a clinical study, their plasma levels of C3G skyrocketed by over 10-fold. Their vitamin C levels also increased by 50% and beta-cryptoxanthin (a carotenoid that’s in color) more than doubled. All three compounds have links to lower risk, which makes blood oranges a potential anticancer superstar. They’re now in season, so consider trying some soon!
